Top 5 Electricity Suppliers – Winter 2022

Top 5 Electricity Suppliers - Winter 2022

Welcome to Electric Road’s ‘Top 5 Electricity Suppliers’ Winter 2022.

At Electric Road, our key objective is to be as useful as we possibly can be for those considering their first/next electric car and related products & services. Electricity suppliers are naturally very important to many electric car owners and while price is the key consideration, renewable energy is a significant factor for a lot of owners.

Owner Ratings

Based on the 5-bolt rating system from over 2,800 Top 5 EV Surveys received up to and including 31st December, Electric Road has extracted the top 5 highest-rated electricity suppliers. Within the review forms, all owners have to provide a bolt rating out of 5 on their current supplier & tariff. We’ve then worked out the average rating for each supplier as shown below.

We hope this summary of EV owners’ opinions will help you make the right decision when the time comes to consider a new electricity supplier. The ‘Top 5 Electricity Suppliers’ will be updated each quarter ensuring you have the latest owner feedback from the Electric Road.

1. Octopus Energy (4.62)

Octopus Energy are our clear winners once again with a substantially higher (average) owner rating score than the other companies in the Top 5.

About Octopus Energy

Being the UK’s most awarded energy supplier is about more than offering the cheapest deals.

We keep our costs far lower than other suppliers so we can pass savings on to you. We’ve never made a profit, and in the energy crisis, we’ve shouldered more than £150 million to give our customers the lowest variable tariff in the UK.

Our business is built on outrageously good customer service. If you need help, a knowledgeable, friendly human will be there for you. 9 times out of 10, we’ll solve your problem in a quick call or a couple of e-mails – Which? found we’re one of the fastest suppliers to reply.

And if we ever get it wrong, we’ll put it right. You can even speak directly to our most senior team by emailing greg@octopus.energy. In tough times, we look after people, and give extra help to those who need it most.

We make our communications simple and transparent. You can get the most important information up front in an email rather than hunting through a password-protected account. We put you in control online, and continuously build new ways to make your experience even better, from a game-changing balance forecast tool to a prize wheel you spin whenever you give a meter reading. Explore your online account.

And we constantly push to make energy better. Tirelessly campaigning for fair protections for customers. And building innovative technologies that forge a path to a green energy system.

‘I use Good Energy standard tariff. They have a cheap night-time tariff but as I have solar panels for daytime charging, I don’t use the night tariff. I recommend Good Energy because they are the only supplier producing more electricity than they sell to their retail customers.’

4. ecotricity (3.82)

About ecotricity

Welcome to Britain’s greenest energy company. All our electricity is certified green, and also certified vegan. Our gas is a mix of carbon-neutralised natural gas and sustainable green gas. What makes us different is that we have no shareholders. So, instead of paying dividends we invest your bills in building new forms of green energy. And, you can be absolutely certain that the energy we supply will not be greenwashed.

Here’s what some of our owners think of ecotricity:

‘I’m on Ecotricity E7 which is a completely green tariff.’

Nissan LEAF 24kWh 2016, Sue. Read the full Owner Review here

‘Ecotricity – they’re OK but they want me to send my v5 to change the tariff to a better one at night. Seems a bit over the top if you ask me. Rate is OK, given recent issues in that market, we’ve been fairly steady because they hedge their supplies against the renewable energies in the UK.’

5. So Energy (3.73)

About So Energy

In 2015, faith in energy suppliers was at an all-time low. That’s why we (Simon and Charlie, school friends who got into the energy industry together) set about building an energy company that was different, that had renewables at its heart and that could help customers reduce their environmental impact, all backed by award-winning customer service.

In 2021, we joined forces with ESB Energy and welcomed our new CEO, Monica, combining the knowledge and resources of the two companies to make something that is truly better together. This means that not only are we able to offer great, green energy, but that even in these unprecedented times, our customers can rest assured that we’re not going anywhere.

Times have moved on since 2015, and we’ve moved with them. Thank you for considering So Energy.

(as published on their website, February 2023)
