Mike Backhouse drives a Nissan LEAF 30kWh 2017.
This is Mike’s first electric car, he’s owned the Nissan LEAF less than a year and drives between 5,000-10,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 70,000-80,000 miles and he achieves 110 miles from a full charge.
Why did you choose the Nissan LEAF?
Fuel economy and better for the environment.
Positives
- Fun to drive
- cheap to run
- comfortable
- geeky with all the options and app!
Negatives
Range isn’t ideal meaning I can’t do even slightly longer journeys. As it’s an older model, the app isn’t great (although I use a 3rd party one which is much better). I would have preferred a newer model for the additional features but this wasn’t in my price range.
Compared to when you first bought the car, does your battery still charge at the same rate & do you still get the same range?
Yes because I only bought it (used) 4 weeks ago!
Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?
No faults yet but I have rectified one potential known issue by buying suspension strut covers to prevent rusting.
What are the standout technological features of the car?
Regen braking & DAB radio.
Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about your Nissan LEAF
Really comfortable to drive and very nippy.
What’s the biggest or funniest myth you’ve heard about EVs?
Multi-storey car parks and bridges won’t be able to cope with the weight!
What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?
MG4 – I’ve loved it since it came out. Great range, well priced and has all the gadgets I want.
Do you charge your electric car from home?
Yes
Electricity supplier & tariff
Octopus Go tariff – gives a cheaper price between 12am and 5am but the compromise is the daytime rate is slightly higher than the standard tariffs.
What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?
Lidl! Best price I’ve found so far for rapid charging (50kW) provided you use the free Lidl app.
Insurance
Price increased when swapping from an ICE car but it was just as simple to swap as an ICE car is.
Please itemise where you’re saving money (or not) owning & running a Nissan LEAF
Currently only saving on energy use. I would spend £15 a week on diesel and I’m now paying £5-£10 on electricity.
