Poppytoo drives a Jaguar I-PACE 90kWh 2024 electric car.
This is Poppytoo’s second electric car, they’ve owned the I-PACE from new and drive 5,000-10,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 500-1,000 miles and they achieve 250 miles range from a full charge.
Why did you choose the Jaguar I-PACE?
Jaguar stopped selling new cars on 11th November 2024 and the dealers had some fantastic deals on new stock in the final two weeks. The discount was £40k off list price and they cleared the finance on the 3-year old car it was replacing. It’s the best car I have ever driven on the best deal I have ever had on a car that had 9 delivery miles only. Upgrades included 22″ wheels, air suspension, glass sunroof and the top spec 3D sound system.
Positives
- It’s the best-looking EV on the market
- it has true sports car heritage
- it looks like a proper GT rather than an SUV
- it has an amazing colour combination and the best wheels that were available
- it accelerates like a scolded cat and sticks to the road in bends better than any car I have driven
- it’s the last of the I-PACE models and Jaguar sorted all the niggles on earlier models including having no 12V battery which was a constant niggle.
Negatives
- It has no rear wiper, so annoying!
- its charge point is at the front and I prefer reverse parking which I can no longer do
- it’s a post-July 2024 car so has all the UK safety features turned on such as lane assist and speed warnings. If you forget to do it before you start driving, these can’t be turned off.
Compared to when you first bought the car, does your battery still charge at the same rate & do you still get the same range?
Yes, it’s only had 4 full charges though so not much to go on and I would be annoyed if it didn’t at this stage!
Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?
No faults
What are the standout technological features of the car?
The air suspension is absolutely amazing. The 22″ wheels would mean a harsh ride in any other car but this is magic carpet smooth. Having the ability to wade deep water on its highest setting and to cruise at 70mph on its lowest setting make it an incredibly versatile car.
Pivi Pro is on the latest I-PACE and it’s an amazing AI-based system that controls all interfaces.
The car has a heat pump so you can have the cabin as hot as you like on a freezing day and it only loses 3 miles of range as the load on the battery is less than 200W rather than 2,000W on EVs that don’t have heat pumps.
Everything you need is on buttons as well as on the integrated screen so you have full control of speed, radio, seats, indicators, heating, lights etc. without the need to poke at an iPad-type screen. Equally, all functions can be controlled by the screen if you have such an urge.
Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about your Jaguar I-PACE
- Rear camera wash/dry function – I’ve had rear cameras before but after a dirty motorway trip it can be impossible to see in reverse but this comes with its own jet wash and blow dry!
- Track mode set up with G meters and hold was a surprise!
- the air ride suspension is brilliant
- The self-attenuating glass sunroof instead of a pull-back sun shade
- The sheer amount of leg and head room – I’m 6’4″ and I can sit behind me in this car and that never happens normally
- 8-years battery warranty as standard
- 6-years servicing for £500
- Two class 1 chargers and 1 DC charging lead supplied and carried in a dedicated space in boot. Having two chargers means one can stay plugged in at home and the other stays in the car.
- clever App to start the car, warm the car and download all the stats to a spreadsheet.
What’s the biggest or funniest myth you’ve heard about EVs?
That the battery will run out in winter, it won’t last and takes too long to charge.
What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?
None, this is my last ever car until Jaguar make a new one as I have driven so many now and nothing beats the all round ability of this car.
Home charging unit
Project EV Apex-7S – It’s a ‘simple, no-nonsense, plug it in & it works’ charger. The Jaguar manages the tariff so the charger just needed to work and it does.
Electricity supplier & tariff
Octopus Go – the car and whole house gets charged at 8.5p per kWh from 00:30 to 05:30 and standard day rate at all other times. It’s simple and so cheap as the car runs at 2p per mile on average.
What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?
InstaVolt – always plenty of slots, rapid chargers and they always work. Banbury Hub is amazing!
Insurance
Admiral – Insurance Group 50 but with no claims discount it’s £600 a year. That’s a lot less than the hybrid as they take into consideration the ease of repair and the Jaguar has been out since 2018 so they have accurate history.
Please itemise where you’re saving money (or not) owning & running a Jaguar I-PACE
- 8,000 miles a year in the Jaguar will cost £160 if charged at home so say £200 with some public charging. My diesel does 30mpg and that’s £2,000 a year.
- Insurance cost is the same as the diesel at £600
- road tax is free currently but going to £190 from April-25 (November for me) and the diesel is double that
- A service is needed every 2 years at £200 on the Jaguar and the diesel is every year at £400 with wet belt every 6 years at £1,000 so so that’s circa £3,000 more over 6 years. Brake pads and discs won’t wear on the Jaguar due to regeneration braking and that’s a £200 saving per year over the diesel.
