Dr Dave drives a BMW i3 120Ah 2020 electric car.

This is Dr Dave’s first electric car, he’s owned the BMW i3 for 3-4 years and drives 5,000-10,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 20,000-30,000 miles and he achieves 160 miles range from a full charge.

Why did you choose the BMW i3?

  • Cheap charging at home
  • need to move way from fossil fuels and use renewable energy.

Positives

  • Performance
  • ease of use.

Negatives

  • Range limited for long journeys
  • wife never used a public charger.

Compared to when you first bought the car, does your battery still charge at the same rate & do you still get the same range?

  • Charging overnight so not noticed a change
  • range about the same – obviously shorter at the moment as it is so cold outside.

Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?

  • Brake master cylinder failed and needed to be replaced, warranty paid for it
  • flint stone punctured a tyre.

What are the standout technological features of the car?

  • Ease of driving
  • direction selector is sensible – push away to go forward and pull back to reverse.

Surprise us! Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about this electric car

Rear door opening is novel but practical.

What’s the biggest or funniest myth you’ve heard about EVs?

EVs catch fire.

What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?

Nissan ARIYA – need a bigger car with a longer range to replace our Evoque diesel.

What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?

  • IONITY and InstaVolt have been excellent from their apps
  • Shell Recharge – again, good from their app
  • GRIDSERVE – you don’t require an app but you do need to follow the sequence correctly.
