Tesla Model 3 2019 electric car owner review

Tesla Model 3 2019 electric car owner review

Ian Hatten drives a Tesla Model 3 Performance 75kWh 2019.

This is Ian’s second electric car, he’s owned the Tesla Model 3 for 3-4 years and drives 5,000-10,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 10,000-20,000 miles and he achieves 300 miles from a full charge.

Why did you choose the Tesla Model 3?

The technology behind the car and the way it has over-the-air updates. The relaxed ease of driving. Long distances can be covered in relative ease. The Supercharging network is second to none for ease of use.

Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?

Front suspension control arms fixed under warranty by a mobile ranger at my place of choice.

What are the standout technological features of the car?

The ability to update the car over the air without the need to visit a dealership to have updates carried out.

The software upgrades that are carried out to the car with no need to visit the dealership, some updates are more welcome than others but even glitches are sorted very quickly.

What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?

Another Tesla Model 3 Performance. It does everything and more for what I expected of it. No service schedule and any servicing of the brakes that I choose to do can be carried out at my local trusted independent garage.

Home charging unit – outline both positive & negative elements

myenergi zappi v2 – all seems to work flawlessly. It can use surplus electricity from my solar panels to divert to charge the car. An app and a web portal helps me monitor what is happening.

Electricity supplier & tariff – outline both positive & negative elements

Octopus Energy and their Intelligent Octopus tariff. Plus point is that I can specify how much charge I need to have and by what time so that they will calculate the best charging times and ensure my car is charged to what I need, providing there is enough time available. I’ve never encountered the car with insufficient charge.

One negative is that on arriving home, when I plug the car in, it can start charging immediately on the more expensive tariff. I’ve yet to find out if it is because I am plugging in too early or if it is just a test to make sure everything works rather than going to the car in the morning only to find out that the charge has failed.

What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?

Tesla, simply pull up and plug in. No faffing with cards or apps. Downside is with there being more Teslas on the road, there can be queues at some. Also with Tesla opening up their network to other makes this can cause issues where the charging layout of the vehicle does not match the Tesla configuration. This can mean that the driver may have had to park in an adjacent bay to enable the cable to reach their car and this blocks both the post they are using to charge but also the post for the bay they are parked in.

Insurer – outline both positive & negative elements

Sainsbury’s Bank – easy to deal with, helpful on the phone and competitively priced from my experience.

Please itemise where you’re saving money owning & running an electric car

My cost for electricity for my commute when working in the office would be £2.50 – £3.00 per day as opposed to £12.00 – £13.00 in petrol.
