Nissan LEAF 40kWh: Getting started with an electric car

Chris’s first electric car was a Nissan LEAF 40kWh.

Why did you buy the Nissan LEAF?

It was time to replace our Fiesta and we went to a EV try out day and fell in love instantly with the smooth drive of the LEAF. The company were offering great deals including the install of a charger with the car and we soon placed an order.

What got you into an electric car in the first place?

Someone pulled up to our house in an EV and we were struck by how quiet and smooth it was.

Initially, what did you find most confusing about electric car ownership and how did you solve that?

Just like any new car there were new buttons to figure out but all easily sorted. We were probably a bit obsessed with “did we have enough range?” in the early days but the answer was almost always “Yes”. We initially signed up for a charging subscription but after a while realised we didn’t need it as rarely needed public charging.

What sources of information helped you e.g. people, groups, websites etc?

Facebook groups mainly and the odd YouTube video.

What are your top 3 pieces of advice for those people considering their first electric car?

  • Get a home charger if you can
  • Get an overnight cheap rate tariff (with a smart meter)
  • Plan stops on the longer journeys at places with more than one or two charger units and plan to stop earlier than you need to in case you need to keep going to the plan B charger!
