Krystyna drove from Bedfordshire to Cornwall in her Mustang Mach-E.

Introducing your road trip

We travelled from Bedfordshire to Cornwall with an overnight stop at Taunton. We stayed in Cornwall for a week, then travelled home via The Cotswolds.

Planning & preparation 

We’d only had the car for a couple of weeks as it had arrived at the dealership earlier than planned. We were originally planning on using a diesel vehicle. We used Zapmap to plan the route and booked the overnight hotel at Taunton as it had a 7kW charger.

Charging 

We aimed to charge at Oxford Services but the only charger was broken. There were queues at a number of M5 motorway service chargers so we found a leisure centre in Taunton with an InstaVolt charger. This worked really well and we used the cafe whilst waiting. The M5 in general is poorly serviced by both the number and reliability of chargers. If this had been a test drive for using an EV I am not sure many would have signed up. As a busy corridor to the South West I was underwhelmed by the facilities available.

Cornwall itself was also lacking, particularly in rapid chargers. On the return journey we had to wait for an hour to access one of six IONITY chargers. Some drivers were charging to 100% which didn’t help matters. We used a rapid charger at The Eden Project but this was quite a walk from the main car park. There were a couple of free 7kW chargers at the main car park.

Did you encounter any great driving roads on your road trip? If so, where were they and why were they great?

We made it all the way to Lizard Point in the car and took an obligatory photo at the lighthouse. Our drive home through the Cotswolds was lovely and we made it to the Diddly Squat Farm Shop too! (owned by Jeremy Clarkson)

The Mustang Mach-E

Many have complained about the uncomfortable drive in the rear of the Mach-E but we had no complaints from our friends who travelled in the back when we were out and about. The car has plenty of room for luggage. It was covered in sand when we got home though!! The adaptive cruise was great on the motorways, particularly in queuing traffic; makes the journey less tiring. The 360 camera is really helpful in tight spaces and on narrow roads.

Road trip conclusion 

This road trip was October 2021, I think there has been some progress since then. I would avoid motorway charging and look elsewhere. It was a challenge and frustrating at times but it was shortly after the fuel crisis so it’s all relative! The car more than makes up for the issues and it’s a great place to be whilst you’re waiting.
