David J uses an Ohme Home Pro 2023 charging unit.
Overall rating for the charging unit
Which company installed it and would you recommend them?
Octopus organised it.
How much did you pay for your unit and installation?
£0 – It was included in my Octopus deal.
Positives
- Neat installation
- default is full charge on connection
- can be controlled via panel but also via phone app.
Negatives
Not in the best location – declined to install it beside the drive as too far to run from supply, so installed on the side of house where car can be parked on the road and connected.
Outline any faults you have experienced with the unit
Unit stuck rebooting after an automatic update, was replaced under warranty but will not remember the car type now. Not a problem if immediate full charge is set, which is how I use it anyway.
Tell us about your home charging routine
Typically do less than 30 miles per day but drive on most days, so connect car to standard (smart controlled via Alexa) mains outlet on the drive. Overnight (slow) charge on cheap rate window scheduled, works fine 95% of the time, full charge by morning. If more miles needed/used, I park the car on the road where Ohme cable can run through a hedge to give a full & fast charge.
If you were buying a new charging unit now, what would you buy and why?
The Ohme Home Pro is fine. The only drawback is that it isn’t installed where the car is normally parked. This is because it is not only a long run, but there is a pond in the way, and the cost and disruption to get the cable (which would have needed to run underground, below the pond) was way too high. There is also something odd with the way the Ohme charger and the car try to talk to each other, which means it doesn’t work to provide ‘smart charging’. However, as outlined above, it all works fine for me, as I only really need an immediate full charge.
Tell us about your electricity provider and tariff. Would you recommend them?
Octopus is brilliant in just about every way. We also have 16 x solar panels and 12kWh of domestic battery, so we run the home and car with a net negative power usage. This means we pay nothing for our electricity, because over the year the power we feed into the grid earns us slightly more than the cost of the (all off-peak) electricity we use.
Are you part of a charger-sharing scheme for those who don’t have their own charger?
Not part if a charger sharing scheme.
