Tesla Model Y 2024 electric car owner review

Tesla Model Y 2024 electric car owner review

Harry Green drives a Tesla Model Y Performance 2024.

This is Harry’s third electric car, he’s owned the Model Y from new and drives 10,000-15,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 10,000-20,000 miles and he achieves 275 miles from a full charge.

Why did you choose the Tesla Model Y?

I like Teslas: their performance & efficiency but I don’t care so much about range. I used to have a Model X 100D and had a Plaid on order but it was cancelled by Tesla as there was no right-hand drive version. A KIA EV9 was also ordered last year but the dealer’s finance and trade-in were pathetic so cancelled that one myself.

Positives

  • Software
  • drivetrain
  • space.

Negatives

  • Nothing, really.

Compared to when you first bought the car, does your battery still charge at the same rate & do you still get the same range?

I find it charges too quick if I’m out on a trip and range shows no battery degradation.

Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?

None

What are the standout technological features of the car?

The electric motors, battery management system and software are excellent. Over-the-air updates come through 2-3 times a month, it seems to add some really fantastic features.

Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about your Tesla Model Y

It has a lower centre of gravity than designs similar to Tesla EVs which makes safety better and virtually no chance of rolling the car.

What’s the biggest or funniest myth you’ve heard about EVs?

You have to fit a new battery every 4-5 years and they cost £20k+!

What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?

Cybertruck, Taycan or Model Y Performance.

Home charging unit

myenergi zappi 7kW with Solar PV – I used to use a Tesla charger but changed to a zappi with grid import/export control. The myenergi Android app is also excellent.

Electricity supplier & tariff

I ended up with E.ON Next by default after the previous company went bust. E.ON do a Next Drive tariff: 6.9p off-peak, 30.5p peak and 16.5p export (plus 56.9p daily standard charge). People rave about Octopus but E.ON’s cost and export is slightly better, in my area anyway.

What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?

Tesla Supercharger Network – don’t use them very often but always work, no RFID card to use and billing in the Tesla app.

Insurer

Direct Line – had 2 claims 4 years ago and they were very good. The only letdown was the loan car they give you. Tried other companies and the quotes are always higher for some reason.

Please itemise where you’re saving money (or not) owning & running a Tesla Model Y

I charge at home 10% of the time, 80% at work (free) and with the occasional Supercharge. In the last 12 months, I think I’ve saved approx. £1,900 compared to my 2.5l petrol car which did 27mpg. The Model Y does the equivalent of 100mpg!
