Alan Jenkins drives an MG4 EV SE Long Range 64kWh 2023.
This is Alan’s first electric car, he’s owned the MG4 EV from new and drives 10,000-15,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 10,000-20,000 miles and he achieves 250 miles from a full charge.
Why did you choose the MG4 EV?
- Price
- range
- utility
- looks.
Positives
- Economy
- driveability
- practicality.
Negatives
- Lane Keep Assist (but you can turn it off)
- steering wheel shape takes getting used to
- inability to save your own settings as default (so I get in, switch off LKA, select ECO… and then have to do it again if I nip out in the car to post a letter).
Compared to when you first bought the car, does your battery still charge at the same rate & do you still get the same range?
Yes to both.
Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?
Within a few weeks, the radio SAID it was playing but wasn’t, Apple CarPlay was the same. It took a week at the dealer before it was rectified but they did lend me another MG4 for the whole time!
What are the standout technological features of the car?
They all standout for me, I’ve not had a new car since 1992 before this one. All the others were four or more years old when bought and pretty basic.
Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about this electric car
0-62 in 7.4 seconds has caught out many a BMW or Audi at a traffic light and even a Porsche, whose owner was roaring with laughter when he caught up with me!
What’s the biggest or funniest myth you’ve heard about EVs?
- They are heavier than ICE cars
- that they all run out of charge suddenly without warning
- that they take ages to charge in public.
What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?
I’ll consider that when this one needs replacement. I don’t spend my time obsessing about cars. Now, when it comes to guitars…stop me when you are bored!
Home charging unit
There are no negatives at all, especially in summer with my car filled with free sunshine via solar panels! It’s all good!
Electricity supplier & tariff
Octopus Go – nothing negative, they are brilliant, especially with cheap overnight charging.
What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?
bp pulse in the UK generally, FastNed in the North East and Octopus in Wales. They are all efficient and well supported.
Insurer
Nothing to say. I have no loyalty to an insurance company, and just get the cheapest I can. They are all legally unavoidable parasites and vultures, basically.
Please itemise where you’re saving money (or not) owning & running an MG4 EV
I have no idea, I kept no such records previously with an ICE and don’t keep figures now, but at an average of 18p per kWh, I must be saving shedloads on fuel alone.
