MG4 EV 2022 electric car owner review

MG4 EV 2022 electric car owner review

Kevin Barron drives an MG4 EV Trophy 63kWh 2022.

This is Kevin’s second electric car, he’s owned the MG4 EV 1-2 years and drives 10,000-15,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 5,000-10,000 miles and he achieves 260 miles from a full charge.

Why did you choose the MG4 EV?

Due to how our driveway is, size was the initial constraint. Out of the cars that fit within the footprint we wanted, the MG4 EV was the best value but it was also the nicest to drive which made picking it easy.

Positives – List 3 or more reasons why you love this electric car

  • Looks beautiful in orange
  • it’s feels nice to drive
  • roomy interior.

Negatives – List 3 or more things that you really don’t like about this electric car

  • The boot is not that big compared to our old car
  • the screen could be taller as you can’t see far ahead on the sat nav
  • no physical buttons for aircon apart from on/off.

Compared to when you first bought the car, does your battery still charge at the same rate & do you still get the same range?

It seems the same.

Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?

The DAB radio cuts out from time to time.

What are the standout technological features of the car?

  • The 360 camera is really useful for parking
  • the lane assist has improved my driving
  • heated steering wheel is something I didn’t know I needed
  • the ability to preheat the car from the app on frozen days
  • scheduled charging from the app
  • I’ve never needed it yet but car location on the app will be really useful, as I’ve had times when I might have needed it in my life!

Surprise us! Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about this electric car

  • Linear acceleration, how the car pulls in a very predictable manner like a perfect engine
  • the engine can’t stall
  • heated steering wheel is so nice
  • when you fold the back seats, it’s pretty flat.

What’s the biggest or funniest myth you’ve heard about EVs?

Because they are heavier the new pollutant will be brake pad dust. If you use regen, you don’t need to use the brakes that much.

What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?

There’s going to be lots of new models, so I don’t know.

Home charging unit – outline both positive & negative elements

myenergi zappi 2 – I’m not sure there is a downside, you don’t have to make a special trip or divert. I schedule my charging for overnight, I think it works out to be a tenth of the cost of petrol.

Electricity supplier & tariff – outline both positive & negative elements

We have an Octopus plan that is specific to people with solar panels and powerwalls. The overnight tariff is very cheap, so that’s ideal for car charging.

What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?

We only use it for long journeys and although we’ve had some bad experiences with them not working (for various reasons), we haven’t had any in the last six months which makes me think things are improving. Get an Electroverse account it umbrellas so many types of charger and means you don’t need to play with downloading apps whilst in a car park.

Insurer – outline both positive & negative elements

LV= we combine it with our house insurance and save a bit of money compared to our previous house insurance.

Please itemise where you’re saving money (or not) owning & running an MG4 EV

Our first annual car service was £80. I don’t know exactly how much we save on charging but I think it’s approx. £100 a month.
