BMW i4 2023 electric car owner review

Jeremy Fewster drives a BMW i4 eDrive35 70k.2Wh 2023.

This is Jeremy’s second electric car, he’s owned the BMW i4 from new and drives 10,000-15,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 1,000-5,000 miles and he achieves 220 miles from a full charge.

Why did you choose the BMW i4?

I had a short list of half a dozen cars that fit my budget on our company’s salary sacrifice scheme. This was the only one whose delivery time matched the expiry date of my previous lease.

Positives – List 3 or more reasons why you love this electric car

  • The handling and performance are superb
  • I love the way it looks
  • its level of kit is fantastic (I opted for the electric seats, HUD and better stereo) and it does everything you’d reasonably want from a car at this price level.

Negatives – List 3 or more things that you really don’t like about this electric car

  • The seats are a little firm (a £20 seat cushion from Amazon fixed that!)
  • there’s no storage under the enormous bonnet
  • the rear leg room can’t exactly be described as generous.

Compared to when you first bought the car, does your battery still charge at the same rate & do you still get the same range?

The car is still relatively new so no issues yet. I owned my Mini for two years and against the laws of physics, that seemed to get better 🤷‍♂️

Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?

The infotainment got stuck on one screen and wouldn’t change. Holding the volume button in for 30 seconds performs a soft reset and quickly fixed it!

What are the standout technological features of the car?

  • The Head Up Display is fantastic and integrates brilliantly with the sat nav
  • the car’s road holding is superb
  • it really puts the power down well, despite the horrible weather we’ve had since I took delivery last November.

Surprise us! Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about this electric car

The app is very responsive and simple to use. In fact, the whole car is very intuitive and easy to get used to quickly. It’s a great driver-orientated environment to be in. I love having the option of using the touch screen or the iDrive for navigating menus which all means you can spend more time looking out the windscreen.

What’s the biggest or funniest myth you’ve heard about EVs?

That they don’t have heaters, when in fact their preheating (and cooling) capability makes them an absolute joy to own.

What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?

I’m at the start of a 4-year lease so not exactly looking but I am hopeful that more EV estate cars are going to become available.

Home charging unit – outline both positive & negative elements

myenergi zappi – it’s easy & convenient to use and the app works well. The only negative is that it’s slightly unsightly, like you have a hose pipe attached to the front of your house.

Electricity supplier & tariff – outline both positive & negative elements

Intelligent Octopus Go – this has been a game changer and made the whole EV ownership experience far more affordable. Once I got the BMW, zappi and Octopus apps in sync it’s been brilliant. (Make sure you do this or it may not charge when you want it to.)

What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?

I tend to plan long journeys around IONITY, InstaVolt and the other Octopus Electroverse partners, as it makes public charging simpler and cheaper (it gets added to your electricity bill and we’re loads in credit, so it’s effectively free).

Please itemise where you’re saving money (or not) owning & running a BMW i4

Petrol & diesel cars aren’t available through our scheme, so I’m saving through tax. This is not an easy question to answer as my last petrol car was a 10-year old V6 with £46 per month VED and pricey problems starting to creep in, so not really comparable to a brand new EV. Fuel-wise, a 100 miles in the V6 cost around £20-25, in the BMW it’s around £2.20.
