Hyundai IONIQ 5 2023 electric car owner review

Lee McCafferty drives a Hyundai IONIQ 5 Premium 58kWh 2023.

This is Lee’s first electric car, he’s owned the Hyundai IONIQ 5 from new and drives 15,000-20,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 5,000-10,000 miles and he achieves 230 miles from a full charge.

Why did you choose the Hyundai IONIQ 5?

I wanted to prove to myself (and sceptics at work) that BEVs are suitable for most people. My work involves travelling to anywhere in the UK to attend breakdown support for power stations and I fancied the challenge. I’ve not had any problems with journeys from the Midlands to Scotland, Cornwall and West Wales so far. With only one twitchy moment after a charge station was out of action but I managed to find an alternative within my measly 6 miles of range left!

Positives – List 3 or more reasons why you love this electric car

  • The looks (and the attention it brings)
  • the size of the inside is vast
  • the comfort is sublime.

Negatives – List 3 or more things that you really don’t like about this electric car

  • Lane keep assist (although at least it is easily switched off)
  • parking sensors are too sensitive
  • turning circle could be tighter.

Compared to when you first bought the car, does your battery still charge at the same rate & do you still get the same range?

Better, as I have learned to drive more efficiently.

Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?

No faults to date.

What are the standout technological features of the car?

I love the pre heating now winter is on its way and the V2L has been extremely helpful in my work. The adaptive cruise control has been seamless and the best feature of all has to be the (very) fast charging.

Surprise us! Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about this electric car

The simple idea of a glove drawer instead of the usual glove box is genius. Not sure why I’ve never seen other manufacturers doing it as it’s far more useful.

What’s the biggest or funniest myth you’ve heard about EVs?

That they ruin the road surface due to the weight!😆 They all must be heavier than the average HGV!

What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?

Hyundai IONIQ 5 N (a bit more fun 😁)

Do you charge your electric car from home?

No

Do you use public charging networks?

Yes

What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?

GRIDSERVE – I have one on my doorstep and have only ever seen one of the 12 fail.

Please itemise where you’re saving money (or not) owning & running a Hyundai IONIQ 5

This car is my company car so I’m saving around £200 per month on the tax I pay. I am also lucky to have free charging at my main office saving me hundreds (if not thousands) of pounds a year. Servicing costs are far lower as are the running/maintenance costs.
