Hyundai IONIQ 2017 electric car owner review

Hyundai IONIQ 2017 electric car owner review

Mike K drives a Hyundai IONIQ 28kWh 2017.

This is Mike’s first electric car, he’s owned the Hyundai IONIQ less than 1 year and drives 10,000-15,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 30,000-40,000 miles and he achieves 143 miles from a full charge.

Why did you choose the Hyundai IONIQ?

I chose this car as my first EV purely by chance! I was looking at the hybrid version but the BEV was cheaper and to be honest, a lot less to go wrong. The 28kWh battery gives plenty of range as most of my journeys are short and on a longer commute of 80 miles it only costs around £2 in ‘fuel’ as I can charge at home off-peak. Trim level is exceptional with plenty of tech. I love the adaptive cruise control, sport mode gives plenty of acceleration and it’s still quiet and very comfortable to drive.

Positives – List 3 or more reasons why you love this electric car

  • Sleek lines
  • modern looks
  • the smoothest drive I’ve ever experienced.

Negatives – List 3 or more things that you really don’t like about this electric car

  • Nothing much, it’s better than my old diesel BMW X1.

Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?

None

What are the standout technological features of the car?

Adaptive cruise control, premium sound system, fast charging and 3 driving modes from Eco through to Sport.

Love the LED headlamps, also has lane departure control/lane keep assist that can keep the car between the lines.

What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?

IONIQ 5 or 6. Increased range along with the trusted Hyundai brand. Of course, I’d love a Tesla with Supercharger ability but a bit beyond my budget at the moment!

Home charging unit – outline both positive & negative elements

Ohme Home Pro – it was a bit expensive to have installed and we’re being messed around by E.ON Next. This is because the smart meter isn’t transmitting readings so they don’t know what’s been used overnight as opposed to the daytime rate, but it’s still cheaper than charging on the public network and convenient too. I have a fully charged and preheated/cooled car every morning!

Electricity supplier & tariff – outline both positive & negative elements

E.ON Next EV tariff – it was great until the smart meter stopped transmitting 6 weeks ago and now they can’t define what was used at night off-peak when I charge the car, run the dishwasher, tumble dryer etc. Very poor customer support & I’m looking to change ASAP.

Do you use public charging networks?

No

Insurer – outline both positive & negative elements

Aviva – no negatives, my EV is cheaper to insure than my old BMW X1.

Please itemise where you’re saving money (or not) owning & running a Hyundai IONIQ
