Hyundai IONIQ 5 2021 electric car owner review

John Sainsbury drives a Hyundai IONIQ 5 Ultimate RWD Eco Tech 2021 electric car.

This is John’s first electric car, he’s owned the IONIQ 5 from new and drives 5,000-10,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 5,000-10,000 miles and he achieves 260 miles range from a full charge.

Why did you choose this electric car?

Initially, I thought range was everything, then I started my research. Yes, it’s important, but speed of charging is also critical. So I was looking for a car with a reasonable 250+ range but also one that could charge very quickly at the fastest chargers. I was drawn initially to the Tesla Model 3, what’s not to like about Superchargers? But their sheer ubiquitousness put me off and that’s when I found the Kia EV6 and ordered one, sight unseen.

Then I waited…and in the meantime I saw the IONIQ 5, I fell in love. I cancelled the EV6 order and spent a morning calling every Hyundai dealer. By lunchtime I’d found one only about 80 miles away. I’ve owned Mercedes, Daimlers, Jaguars and many Lexus, this is the best car overall that I’ve ever owned in 49 years of driving and nearly 40 cars.

Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?

The usual – flat 12 volt battery and a failure to proceed a couple of times where I probably didn’t follow the correct procedure…or maybe I did!

What are the standout tech features of the car?

I have a Level 2 car – newer cars have gone down to level 1.5 autonomy. The adaptive cruise is good, the lane change works well, particularly in France on 2 lane motorways. The camera view in the screen when signalling is a great safety feature. Not exactly tech but the sliding centre console is really useful. Heated & ventilated seats are very good. Steering assist can sometimes result in a tug of war but I think I’m winning that war!

Surprise us! Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about this electric car

It’s a wonderful car to drive through Europe on a long trip, 660 miles in a day is easily achievable. The most restful car I’ve ever owned; on a long journey it’s easy to underestimate how pleasant a near silent car can be.

What electric car are you interested in next and why?

Hyundai IONIQ 5 Namsan Edition RWD – basically the same car as I’ve got now but with a panoramic roof which I’ve really missed and digital wing mirrors which I’m ready to try!
