Renault ZOE ZE40 2018, Jack S - EV Owner Review

Why did you choose this car?
I wanted to get away from ICE, following the UK Government’s decision to ban sales of ICE from 2030. This car was chosen by What Car? as the best value small EV in 2021 and the best-used car award in 2022. Also, the Government was offering a long-term zero-interest loan for the purchase of second-hand EVs from September 2020. In particular, this one was for sale in my price range at a local Renault franchise.

Positives – List 3 or more reasons why you love this car.

  • Less mechanical parts to go wrong
  • having automatic gearbox
  • having touch screen for most secondary controls
  • higher quality entertainment system
  • comprehensive info at your fingertips.

Negatives – List 3 or more things that you really don’t like about this car.

  • The tiny glovebox
  • Less convenient storage sections in the front seating area than my previous Honda Jazz.

Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?

  • In icy weather, the front door which opens to the charging socket froze up – rectified by spraying PTFE on the rubber gasket
  • Remote control batteries need replacement more frequently than most others
  • Otherwise, nothing else.

What are the standout tech features of the car?

  • The reversing camera with sensing beeps for obstructions
  • Heated front seating
  • Temperature preconditioning by remote control.

Surprise us! Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about this car.
Most people have heard it all before I imagine.

What car are you interested in next and why?
Tesla Model 3, if I win the lottery but have to buy tickets first. This one should/will see me out unless I give in to my better half who will not drive this one and wants an ICE instead.

What home charging unit do you use? Would you recommend it to others and why?
Wallbox tethered and yes. One of the cheapest smart chargers which qualified for the Government grant.

What home electricity supplier & tariff do you use? Would you recommend it to others and why?
Octopus Go –  yes, has a small footprint and the installer made a good job of the installation. Also, Scottish Power gave a £50 discount at the time – January 2021.

What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?
ChargePlus Scotland and Pod Point. At the moment, the council is paying for the electricity. However some local charge points (G77) have a maintenance company who are in administration so are out of use more often than not.

List your top 3 favourite public charging networks (in order of preference).

  1. CPS
  2. Pod Point
  3. Ecotricity.

Who do you insure your EV with? Would you recommend them to others and why?
Tesco (big name) is not the cheapest but have good features.

Rate your insurance provider out of 5.

Estimate how much money you save per month owning and running an EV compared to a petrol/diesel car.
£80.
