GarryH drives an MG4 EV Trophy 64kWh 2024.
This is Garry’s second electric car, he’s owned the MG4 EV less than a year and drives 10,000-15,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 1,000-5,000 miles and he achieves 200 miles from a full charge.
Why did you choose the MG4 EV?
Wanted a longer range than my previous car. This car was greatly reduced in price, pre-registered with 300 miles on the clock. I liked the shape, style and comfort of the car as well as the high tech in the cabin.
Positives
- Styling
- comfort
- good summer range.
Negatives
- Software can be glitchy
- lane keep assist is too sensitive
- touchscreen doesn’t always react to first touch
- tailgate is heavy.
Compared to when you first bought the car, does your battery still charge at the same rate & do you still get the same range?
I still get a good range but winter knocks this down as expected.
Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?
- Auto headlights were on all the time and this has now been sorted
- The wind noise from drivers 1/4 glass, parts on order
- CarPlay wouldn’t connect which required a software update
- Also experienced a rattle from the dash but the garage couldn’t hear it.
What are the standout technological features of the car?
- 360 degree camera
- adaptive cruise control
- traffic jam assist control
- heated steering wheel.

What’s the biggest or funniest myth you’ve heard about EVs?
- They set on fire during charging
- you get a shock when charging in the rain
- take hours to charge
- batteries don’t last long
- you will need to change after a few years
- have to queue all the time to charge.
What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?
Possibly Tesla, amazing technology and constantly evolving.
Home charging unit
waEV charger mk1 – I plug in at night using cheap electric and it’s easy to use via the App.
It’s not accepted by Intelligent Octopus Go. I had trouble setting the charge at first and a developer had to add a ‘trickle charge’ switch as the car went to sleep and wouldn’t accept the charge. It also has solar charge capability and they offer amazing customer service.
Electricity supplier & tariff
- Octopus Go – cheaper night rates
- I get e-mails informing me of free electric for 1 hour every so often
- their customer service not as good as it was
- Octopus offer an Electroverse RFID card – you tap this card and the cost goes onto your utility bill and you get cheaper rates at charging points.
What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?
- Tesla – much cheaper
- Osprey – good units
- GeniePoint – avoid, they aren’t reliable and can be faulty for months as they don’t get repaired.
Insurer
Howdens – they get me the best deal for me.
Please itemise where you’re saving money (or not) owning & running an MG4 EV
- I save on fuel, about £50 p/m
- had free road tax for a year
- insurance – I think must be about the same as an ICE car
- servicing is cheaper but not as cheap as it should be, about £500 for 3 years
- In summer, I get free charging when the sun is out!
