Hyundai IONIQ 2019 electric car owner review

Hyundai IONIQ 2019 electric car owner review

Jungle drives a Hyundai IONIQ Electric 38kWh 2019.

This is Jungle’s first electric car, he’s owned the Hyundai IONIQ from new and drives 10,000-15,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 40,000-50,000 miles and he achieves 200 miles from a full charge.

Why did you choose the Hyundai IONIQ?

I’d owned an IONIQ Hybrid before but wanted to move to a full electric vehicle. The IONIQ was a better deal than other models.

Positives – List 3 or more reasons why you love this electric car

  • Climate pre-heating
  • ease of home charging
  • overall experience
  • comprehensive Hyundai warranty.

Negatives – List 3 or more things that you really don’t like about this electric car

  • Sporadically flaky vehicle software
  • slightly plasticky feel of interior
  • poor rear visibility.

Compared to when you first bought the car, does your battery still charge at the same rate & do you still get the same range?

Yes, range remains as good as new but this is possibly helped by a (warranty) battery replacement in year 2.

Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?

  • Battery had a manufacturing fault and was replaced in a recall
  • vehicle coolant had an issue which was dealt with under warranty
  • alloy wheels delaminated which was also handled under warranty.

What are the standout technological features of the car?

  • Energy efficiency is superb
  • connected Bluelink system allows remote control over some car functions
  • car is comfortable and easy to use.

Surprise us! Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about this electric car

The biggest thing is Hyundai’s warranty and service from the dealer network. This has been superb and faults always get sorted.

What’s the biggest or funniest myth you’ve heard about EVs?

Where to start? They all catch on fire, they will cause the collapse of car parks, they won’t work in winter etc etc.

What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?

I like the IONIQ 5, the IONIQ 6 & the Tesla Model S.

Home charging unit – outline both positive & negative elements

myenergi zappi – it’s good but is not wholly intuitive to use. There’s a good level of features – scheduled charging, charging only from solar etc.

Electricity supplier & tariff – outline both positive & negative elements

Octopus Flux – it’s good but the super cheap period doesn’t last long enough for a full overnight charge.

What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?

bp seem the best IMHO. I’d love to use the Tesla network but they aren’t available near me.

Insurer – outline both positive & negative elements

Aviva – no problems. Have thus far avoided scare stories of very expensive EV insurance.

Please itemise where you’re saving money (or not) owning & running an electric car

  • Season ticket parking saving of 90% in Southampton
  • no road tax
  • far lower service costs
  • ‘fuel’ costs (especially with home charging) are much lower than petrol or diesel
  • tyres last far longer (currently still on 2 originals at 45k miles)
  • I think we are saving over £2,000 per year.
