Nissan LEAF 2021 electric car owner review

Paul Carnall (Yorkshire EV Club) drives a Nissan LEAF e+ Tekna 62kWh 2021 electric car.

This is Paul’s sixth electric car, he’s owned the Nissan LEAF under 1 year and drives 10,000-15,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 5,000-10,000 miles and he achieves 230 miles range from a full charge.

Why did you choose the Nissan LEAF?

All the toys. Plus having had previous LEAFs I know where all the buttons are!

Positives – List 3 or more reasons why you love this electric car

  • The equipment level
  • one pedal driving
  • the colour.

Negatives – List 3 or more things that you really don’t like about this electric car

  • Seating could be more comfortable
  • paint chips easily
  • no wireless android auto.

Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?

Only the usual creaky door mirrors I’ve had on every Nissan!

What are the standout technological features of the car?

e-Pedal, ProPILOT & acceleration. All are a revelation & make the car easy to drive.

Surprise us! Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about this electric car

  • I love playing with all the driving modes from e-Pedal to just D on the motorway
  • One of the surprises was the difference in acceleration between the 40 to the 62kWh
  • If you have come from an ICE to an EV you could get caught out with the immediate acceleration.

What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?

According to my wife this is my retirement car and in her words, ” they can bury you in it” but she said that about the last one 🤣. As she now has a VW e-up! I may have one more in me. I do fancy the Mustang Mach-E, so watch this space!

Outline both positive & negative elements of your home charging unit

Pod Point works fine in 3yrs had no issues. Not used app much as I use the car’s timer.

Outline both positive & negative elements of your electricity supplier & tariff

Octopus Go – luckily locked in till January 2023 (14p daytime, 5p 4hrs at night). Not looking forward to the rates I’m going to pay in February & will definitely look around before then.

What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?

I love InstaVolt, definitely my favourite & they’ve never let me down. But having the 62kWh e+ Tekna means the 200 plus miles range has meant that I’ve not used public chargers since I got her in October 2021.

Outline both positive & negative elements of your insurer

Hastings insurance – I neither like or dislike, it’s a necessary part of owning a car. If I found an insurance company cheaper with the same spec I would change. I have no loyalty to them.

Itemise how much money you’re saving each month owning & running your electric car

Bit out of date as I’m 5 yrs in owning EVs but here’s my initial workings out that convinced me to get an EV; being a Yorkshireman costs came top of my criteria!

Costs:

  • 2004 Volvo XC90 2.4 diesel – Tax £300, Servicing £400, Fuel £4,000 (66 mile commute) =  £4,700 a year.
  • Nissan LEAF – Tax £0, Servicing £150, PCP £250 month, Fuel £260 = £3,410 a year.

I did the maths! I had A4 sheets of paper all over the place still couldn’t make the fossil car cheaper.
