Electric Classic Cars – Company Spotlight 3

Company Spotlight 3 - Electric Classic Cars

Richard founded Electric Classic Cars (ECC) after what began as a hobby in the home garage on evenings and weekends grew too big to keep the ‘day job’.

Richard (aka Moggy) has classic car DNA flowing though him, having owned, restored and raced various classics since the age of 17. He has also worked in the energy industry for the past 20+ years, helping some of the world’s largest organisations reduce their carbon emissions.

ECC was born out of the passion for classic cars and the desire to make them more reliable and ecological to drive using the knowledge gained in the energy efficiency and control industry. ECC are now the largest classic car conversion specialists in the world.

ECC was formally incorporated in 2016 but Moggy has been converting cars as a hobbyist prior to this. A total of 15 employees work at ECC, primarily at their base in Newtown, Powys, Wales.

What does Electric Classic Cars do?

We have a passion for iconic classic cars and relish transforming them to 100% electric. We’ve converted everything from the FIAT 500 to a Ferrari 308 and can do anything from ‘mild to wild’. What are your main products/services?

We convert customers’ donor cars to electric. We have a preference for classic cars from the ‘50s to early ‘80s but will do later models of certain vehicles, including the Land Rover Defender which we will convert up to 2016. We also supply specialist conversion workshops with component kits to carry out their own conversions.

How do you deliver a great customer experience?

We’ve assembled an excellent team who enjoy a challenge. Our workshop team includes electricians, engineers and fabricators to make sure each customer gets a professional and bespoke build.  This is supported by a busy admin team who make sure this is all possible. We’re enthusiastic about what we do and our aim is to help our customers achieve their dream conversion.

How is your company helping the growth of the wider EV market?

Whether our customers want to keep their beloved classic cars on the road by giving them longevity and improved performance or whether our customers are keen to have the latest technology and performance for their cars, we can help them all. We also support those customers who are looking to be more sustainable and environmentally-conscious in future-proofing their cars. Our services also mean that we can support conversion workshops’ businesses by supplying conversion kits and components for their own builds.

How have you learned from your mistakes?

Every day is another learning curve. Each project is a new R&D challenge. Technology and components are developing at lightning speed and we’re always running to stay ahead of new developments. Having ambitious customers also means that we have some ground-breaking builds and opportunities which bring with them daily challenges and learning opportunities.

What do your customers say about you?

Many customers come back for more and ask us to convert further vehicles for them. They’re pleased and proud to contribute to our growing popularity and are keen to take on the role of ambassadors for what we do. We’re lucky to have carried out conversions for some really excellent clients who have become friends.

Changes in technology, supply chain issues and streamlining our services are the biggest challenges we face. Luckily, we love a challenge!

How are you improving your products/services?

We’re constantly developing our products and services. A lot of this happens naturally, from the needs and wants of our customers which always helps to steer what we do. We also have several R&D projects of our own which are fantastic opportunities to try out all the newest ideas and latest technology first, before putting them in our customers’ cars.
