This is Billy’s first electric car, he’s owned the MG5 EV under 1 year and drives between 15,000-20,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 5,000-10,000 miles and he achieves 190 miles range from a full charge.

Why did you choose the MG5 EV?

The car itself wasn’t the deciding factor for me. I lease my car and decided it was time to go for an EV. I wanted to go for another manufacturer but they worked out too expensive per month so I decided to go for the MG and I was very pleased with the car overall. The car is very well built, better built than some ‘premium’ cars I’ve had in the past. It isn’t the most energy efficient but it does the job for me in relative comfort, half decent stereo once the full band equaliser is tweaked to how I like it and adequate power for a small estate car.

Positives – List 3 or more reasons why you love this electric car.

  • There’s a small slot on the side of the centre console for you to place your phone in when you’re using CarPlay or Android Auto. It’s perfect, keeps it out of the way and the screen facing away from the driver.
  • The day-to-day performance is surprising for the kind of car it is
  • It’s smooth, quiet and has great suspension.

Negatives – List 3 or more things that you really don’t like about this electric car.

  • I hate the front centre position of the charging socket, it’s too low, the door is flimsy and the rubber CCS covers are awkward to get back on
  • The headlights are very poor
  • The alarm goes off every time I have it plugged in and charging, every single time.

Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?

The alarm goes off when the car is charging. Don’t know why, it does it more often when it’s charging AC. With DC charging the alarm will go off once or twice and then stop but with AC charging it will go off again and again and again.

What are the standout tech features of your MG5 EV?

It isn’t really a tech car, it’s got Apple CarPlay and Android Auto but that’s about it. The reversing camera is pretty clear though. One thing I do really like is the way the reversing sensors don’t make a noise and on the screen it tells you the distance in centimetres instead of vague green/orange/red lines.

Surprise us! Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about this MG5 EV.

The build quality is excellent.

What electric car are you interested in next and why?

Renault Megane E-Tech. It’s a bit smaller than the MG, more range than the MG which means I wouldn’t need to stop on a 200 mile journey to see family and it also has more tech, better headlights and a better stereo.
