Why I Chose the 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric N Line S

This 2024 Hyundai Kona is my very first electric car, and I did my homework on long-term engineering before committing. Hyundai is widely known for reliability and efficiency when it comes to cars—and especially electric vehicles.

What really sealed the deal for me is that the Kona EV has some of the best battery technology out there; real-world data shows that its battery state of health (SoH) after 100,000 miles is still over 97%, which is right up there with the best in the industry. Coupled with a generous warranty package (7-year warranty protection), choosing the Kona EV was a complete no-brainer for me.

I went straight for the top-trim N Line S model with the 65kWh (65.4kWh usable) Long Range battery. In N Line S specification, the car gets sporty N Line body styling, 19-inch alloy wheels, heated and ventilated Alcantara and leather seats, a BOSE sound system, and every piece of driver assistance tech on Hyundai’s shelf without needing to tick extra option boxes.

Driving Experience: The Joy of i-Pedal One-Pedal Driving

Out on the road, one of the absolute best things about driving the Kona Electric every day is its one-pedal driving capability via Hyundai’s i-Pedal mode.

Using the steering wheel paddles to engage i-Pedal lets you accelerate, slow down smoothly, and bring the 218PS SUV to a complete stop using only the accelerator pedal, feeding energy straight back into the battery under regenerative braking. In stop-start urban traffic and on twisty commuter routes, it makes driving noticeably more relaxing while keeping efficiency high.

Favourite Tech & Best-Kept Secrets: HUD & 360° Camera

Because mine is the flagship N Line S specification, the cabin is packed with clever equipment that makes daily life easier. When people ask me about my favourite tech and the car’s best-kept secret, two features stand out immediately:

  • The 360-Degree Surround View Camera: Having a crystal-clear, all-round bird’s-eye view on the 12.3-inch central screen takes all the guesswork out of tight car parks and kerbs.

  • The Head-Up Display (HUD): Projecting my speed, navigation directions, and safety alerts directly into my line of sight means I rarely have to take my eyes off the road ahead.

  • Strong Full-Charge Range: Alongside the cameras and HUD, simply having such dependable miles available on a full charge makes every trip stress-free.

Real-World Range, Battery Health & Faultless Reliability

My Kona currently has between 15,000 and 20,000 miles on the clock, and I cover an estimated 5,000 to 10,000 miles a year.

  • Real-World Range (80% Charge): From a routine 80% charge, I consistently achieve an average of 200 miles of real-world range. When charged to 100% for longer journeys, that equates to roughly 250 miles of real-world driving—delivering around 3.8 miles per kWh in mixed UK conditions.

  • Battery Performance: True to Hyundai’s reputation for industry-leading battery management, I have had no issues whatsoever with the battery, which continues to hold its charge and perform as fresh as day one.

  • Reliability: Across 15,000 to 20,000 miles, I haven’t experienced a single fault or issue with the car.

The Positives & Negatives: My Honest Verdict

The Positives: What Makes the Hyundai Kona Electric Great

  • Effortless One-Pedal Driving: The i-Pedal system makes town and commuter driving smooth, intuitive, and efficient.

  • Superb Visibility & Driver Tech: The Head-Up Display (HUD) and 360-degree camera are standout everyday features.

  • Proven Battery Tech & Peace of Mind: Knowing Kona EVs retain over 97% battery health past 100,000 miles—backed by strong warranty cover—gives huge confidence.

  • Low Running & Maintenance Costs: Significantly cheaper to run and service than an internal combustion car.

The Negatives: What Could Be Better?

  • Zero Complaints on the Car: Honestly, I have found no negatives so far with the vehicle itself. My only minor wish is that my energy supplier’s off-peak overnight charging window started an hour earlier at 11:00pm rather than midnight!

Home Charging at 5.23p/kWh, Insurance & Monthly Savings

Because the Kona delivers an easy 200 miles from an 80% top-up, I do not use public charging networks at all and handle 100% of my charging on my driveway at home:

  • Home Wallbox: I have a 7.4kW home charging unit installed.

  • Electricity Supplier & Tariff: I am with British Gas (BG) and charge off-peak between 00:00 (midnight) and 05:00 at just 5.23p per kWh. I really like the tariff and the ultra-low rate, though the timing could have been even better if it ran for six hours from 23:00 to 05:00. Even within the five-hour window, a 7.4kW charger adds around 35–37kWh overnight—putting well over 135 miles of range into the Kona for less than £1.95! (Prices correct as of October 2026.)

Insurance & Running Cost Savings: I personally insure the car through General Insurance. Between the lower servicing costs and charging at 5.23p/kWh at home, I am seeing huge savings—saving more than £50 every single month since switching to an EV.

What’s Next on My EV Radar?

My first electric car experience with the Kona N Line S has completely won me over to battery-electric motoring. If I were to trade in my keys tomorrow, the three brands and models at the top of my shortlist would be stepping up to the larger Hyundai IONIQ 5, a Polestar, or one of the new models from XPENG.
