Why I Chose the 2024 MG4 EV Trophy Long Range
This 2024 MG4 EV is my very first electric car. When I was looking to make the switch away from petrol, I didn’t need months of convincing—I simply booked a test drive in an MG4 and fell in love with the car immediately.
I opted for the standard Trophy Long Range model finished in striking Volcano Orange, which comes equipped with the 64kWh battery pack (offering around 61.7kWh of usable capacity) and a punchy 203hp rear-wheel-drive setup. Because the Trophy trim is already so generously equipped out of the box, I didn’t need to tick a single optional upgrade.
Driving Experience, Comfort & My Best-Kept EV Secret
Covering between 10,000 and 15,000 miles a year means I spend plenty of time behind the wheel, and the MG4’s overall driving comfort has been one of the biggest highlights of ownership. Whether I am nipping around town or cruising on longer runs, the ride is composed, refined, and effortless.
If you ask me what the ‘best-kept secret’ of the car is—especially as someone coming straight from internal combustion cars—it is the complete absence of lag when pulling away. Unlike a traditional petrol car where you wait for the engine revs and gearbox to catch up, the instant electric torque in the MG4 responds the very millisecond you touch the accelerator. It makes junctions, roundabouts, and everyday driving noticeably smoother and more enjoyable.
Favourite Tech: 360° Cameras & Winter Comfort
Because mine is the Trophy specification, it comes loaded with creature comforts and driver convenience features as standard. Without a doubt, my favourite pieces of onboard technology are:
-
The 360° Parking Camera: Having a full bird’s-eye view around the car makes manoeuvring and slotting into tight parking spaces effortless.
-
Heated Front Seats & Heated Steering Wheel: Both warm up quickly on cold British mornings and add a real touch of luxury to the cabin, while helping to keep me comfortable without having to blast the main cabin heater.
Real-World Range, Battery Health & Reliability After 20,000+ Miles
My car currently has between 20,000 and 25,000 miles on the odometer. For day-to-day battery care, I routinely charge to 80%, from which I consistently achieve an average real-world range of 190 miles. When scaled up to a full 100% charge for longer trips, that translates to roughly 235 to 240 miles of usable real-world range.
Even with over 20,000 miles under its belt, the 61.7kWh (usable) battery is performing brilliantly and still charges just as well as it did on day one, with no noticeable drop-off in charging speed or capacity. Better still, reliability has been faultless—I have experienced zero issues or faults with the car during my ownership.
The Positives & Negatives: My Honest Verdict
The Positives: What Makes the MG4 EV Great
-
Superb Drive & Comfort: It is genuinely enjoyable, smooth, and comfortable to drive every single day.
-
Instant Responsiveness: Zero lag when pulling away compared to a petrol car.
-
Ultra-Low Charging Costs: Pairing the car with a smart EV tariff has slashed my motoring bills.
-
Practical Everyday Range & Spec: Getting 190 miles from a routine 80% top-up, alongside great standard tech like the 360° camera and heated seats/steering wheel, covers my daily needs with ease.
The Negatives: What Could Be Better?
-
Extra Range Is Always Welcome: While the current range comfortably handles my routine journeys, having an even longer range on a single charge would be nice for complete peace of mind on longer trips.
Home Charging with the Ohme ePod, Octopus Energy & Public Networks
All of my charging so far has been done conveniently on my driveway at home.
-
Home Charging Unit: I had an Ohme ePod untethered wallbox installed on the side of my house, and in my experience, it is simply perfect. It is neat, compact, and completely hassle-free.
-
Electricity Supplier & Tariff: I am with Octopus Energy on the Intelligent Octopus Go tariff. It pairs seamlessly with my Ohme ePod to schedule charging automatically during off-peak overnight windows at ultra-cheap rates.
-
Public Charging Networks: Because my home setup and 190-mile (80%) range cover everything I need, I haven’t actually had to charge away from home on the public network just yet. However, I already have the Octopus Electroverse app set up and ready to go on my phone for whenever I do venture further afield.
EV Insurance & How the MG4 EV Is Saving Me a Small Fortune
One point worth flagging for prospective buyers is insurance. When I bought the MG4, I actually had to switch insurance providers because my previous insurer wouldn’t cover this type of electric vehicle. It definitely pays to shop around before collection day.
When it comes to day-to-day running costs, however, switching to the MG4 EV is saving me a small fortune. To put the numbers into perspective:
-
I have recently driven almost 1,000 miles for a total electricity cost of less than £30 (under 3p per mile) charging at home on Intelligent Octopus Go (prices correct as of October 2026).
-
In my previous petrol car, covering that same 1,000 miles would have cost me at least £140 in fuel.
That is a saving of more than £110 for every 1,000 miles driven—which, over my annual mileage of 10,000 to 15,000 miles, adds up to well over £1,100 to £1,650 saved every single year on fuel alone.
What’s Next on My EV Radar?
After falling in love with my first electric car and seeing the financial benefits first-hand, there is no going back to petrol for me. If I were to trade in my keys tomorrow, I would be looking straight at either a newer MG model or stepping up to the sleek BYD Seal.
