Hyundai Kona Electric 2021, Geoff Knight

Geoff Knight drives a Hyundai Kona Electric Premium 64kWh 2021

This is Geoff’s first EV and he’s owned the Kona Electric less than a year. Geoff drives 5,000-10,000 miles annually and the current mileage of the car is between 5,000-10,000 miles. He achieves, on average, 190 miles range from an 80% charge.

Why did you choose this car?

I have solar, a battery and a heat pump, so an EV was my next step. For a long time I was concerned about range and influenced by my son-in-law who is a mechanic and petrolhead. When I researched more thoroughly, I found that many of the stories re: range and other well publicised issues with EVs were untrue or exaggerated. It was time to change cars, so I looked at EVs and hybrids. I liked the Kona Electric so I eventually bought it and made the shift.

Positives

Cheap to run as I am on a pension and fuel is going up rapidly.

Negatives

More legroom in the back, but it’s usually only 2 of us.

Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?

None, so far.

What are the standout technological features of the car?

Adaptive cruise control and reactive brakes.

What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?

JAECOO – looks cool!

Home charging unit

Sync Energy – simple to use overnight on a cheap rate and they pay me £5 per month for joining demand flexibility.

Electricity supplier & tariff

Intelligent Octopus Go – Nothing I don’t like. Would be nice if my charger linked with Intelligent Octopus Go, though.

Pounds cheaper to run as I am on a pension. The only drawback is the insurance cost being higher and also the new government claw back coming in. But running costs well offset that.
