Robert Miles drives a BYD Sealion 7 AWD Excellence 91.3kWh.
This is Robert’s third EV and he’s owned the BYD Sealion less than a year. He drives 5,000-10,000 miles annually and the current mileage of the car is between 1,000-5,000 miles. He achieves 260 miles range from an 80% charge.
Why did you choose this car?
I test drove it and it went well. All extras came as standard and BYD were running some excellent deals.
Positives
It’s very well finished and comes with so many extras, it’s untrue. Generally, a beautiful car at a very good price!
Negatives
The car rides terribly over bumps in the road surface to such an extent that the car seems to jump about. Taken it back to the dealer who says the tyres we’re “too tight” but they were at the recommended pressure level. I didn’t get the best impression of the dealership in aftersales. Also, there are no buttons, everything is controlled by a large flat screen, which frankly is confusing.
Compared to when you first bought the car, does your battery still charge at the same rate & do you still get the same range?
No problem in that area.
Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?
No real faults, my iPhone wouldn’t connect properly to which the dealer just said BYD has connection problems with iPhones, which frankly I don’t accept. Apple CarPlay is sometimes difficult to connect and you can’t use the BYD navigation system, it’s worse than useless.
What are the standout technological features of the car?
The large flat screen is absolutely brilliant, it just takes a while to manoeuvre around it.
Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about your Sealion 7
The seats are very comfortable and are fitted with a heating and cooling function.
What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?
I’ve had two Mercedes EVs previously and the ride was enjoyable and the aftersales was excellent.
Electricity supplier & tariff
E.ON Drive – To be honest I really can’t find any fault, my wife’s and my EV are both charged off-peak and we spend between us no more than twenty five pounds in electricity per month.
Insurance
Admiral Multi Car policy is excellent value for money.

As I said, we only spend £25 per month on off-peak electricity, which is primarily to charge the cars, so tremendous savings.
