Anthony drives a Škoda Enyaq 85x Sportline 77kWh 2025, standard specification.
This is Anthony’s fourth electric car, he’s owned the Škoda Enyaq less than a year and drives 15,000-20,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 5,000-10,000 miles and he achieves 270 miles on an 80% charge.
Why did you choose the Škoda Enyaq 85x?
This is a Motability lease vehicle. It was literally chosen from a tick list; it needed to be practical and to be able carry a mobility scooter, wheelchair and/or walker as my wife has Parkinson’s Disease which has progressed and now affects her mobility.
Also prime considerations were ease of driving, ease of access and egress and comfort. Having owned three previous EVs, we wanted another one with 300+ miles range we had become accustomed to.
Having never considered Škoda, particularly as the current VW EV range is so undesirable, in my opinion, it was a pleasant surprise to test drive this model. I admit there are things I don’t like about it but practicality and affordability won out.
We tested the basic model (is there any such thing in modern EVs?) and we were set to order one as the deposit was affordable but we were informed of a 7 month wait. However, this 85x Sportline was available immediately…
Positives
- It does what we need it to do and in comfort
- range is well over 300 miles
- the suspension is the best I’ve experienced, even with 58kg of mobility scooter in the back, it copes with our local crumbling roads admirably
- matrix headlights are a revelation! how aren’t I blinding everyone?
- space in the back is ‘limoesque’ for passengers, also plenty of room for shopping etc. as we effectively have no usable boot space.
Negatives
- Software is truly appalling – how VW/Škoda deem this acceptable is beyond me, thank goodness for wireless CarPlay
- ‘Easy open’ boot has hit me several times – now switched off
- door opening and closing is hit and miss – if one doesn’t open/lock you have to use another
- “Key not found” – an almost daily occurrence
- no front storage for cables etc. – there is room under the bonnet for a suitable tray, but Skoda didn’t think it necessary, a big fail on their part
- difficult to drive smoothly – the only combination of settings which I use now are B NORMAL, AUTO HOLD OFF, anything else results in a snatch pull off
- the car has adjustable regen using paddles, totally ineffective
- vibration and noise from the front motor when turning at low speed, apparently can be a characteristic of dual motor vehicles.
Compared to when you first bought the car, does your battery still charge at the same rate & do you still get the same range?
5,000 miles and 100% range around 330 miles and average consumption since new is 3.9 miles/kWh.
Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?
‘Easy open’ hatch has a mind of its own. The dealer was unable to rectify this so it’s now switched off and I’m using the key fob. Noise and vibration from the front motor when turning. Again, the dealer was unable to rectify, apparently a characteristic of the 85x. No worse since new so I’m not concerned.
What are the standout technological features of the car?
The matrix headlights are a revelation. It’s like driving on full beam all night without blinding oncoming drivers, truly remarkable. The suspension is pure magic, the best I’ve experienced.
Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about your Škoda Enyaq 85x
- It has an umbrella in a secret (not really) compartment in the drivers door
- it has an ice scraper in the hatch
- it has movable grippy panels which stop boxes sliding around the boot
- and the matrix headlights, have I mentioned those?
What’s the biggest or funniest myth you’ve heard about EVs?
That they take aaaaaaages to charge.
Home charging unit
Rolec Smart Wallpod 2019
Electricity supplier & tariff
Octopus Go – fixed 12 months
What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?
- Tesla – open to all, speed, cost and reliability
- Pod Point – everywhere, reliable, cost effective and 100% app reliability over 5 years for me.
