‘MG5 SW Trophy’ drives an MG5 EV Trophy Long Range 57.4kWh 2024, standard specification.
This is MGSWT’s fourth electric car, they’ve owned the MG5 EV 1-2 years and drive 5,000-10,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 10,000-20,000 miles and they achieve 160 miles range from an 80% charge.
Why did you choose the MG5 EV?
Value for money and practicality.
Positives
- It’s an estate
- comfortable
- easy to drive
- MG pilot.
Negatives
- The infotainment system is slow and glitchy
- build quality of the bits you don’t see isn’t the best.
Compared to when you first bought the car, does your battery still charge at the same rate & do you still get the same range?
Yes
Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?
The lacquer started coming off the wheels which were replaced under warranty. There is an ongoing problem with the AC charger that MG haven’t been able to fix.
What are the standout technological features of the car?
MG Pilot is almost as good as the Tesla system and comes as standard.
Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about your MG5 EV
It’s probably one of the best value most practical EVs you can buy and second-hand they are stupendous value. Generally, they are very reliable as you can see by the huge number of them that are used as taxis.
What’s the biggest or funniest myth you’ve heard about EVs?
The funniest is that apparently you can’t take them into a car wash. The biggest is that the battery will need replacing after a few years.
What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?
VW ID.7 – I would like an estate car and when I sell the MG in a few years I will be able to afford one second-hand.
Home charging unit
myenergi zappi 2 – expensive but it allows me to best utilise our solar. Made in the UK, too.
Electricity supplier & tariff
Intelligent Octopus Go
What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?
Tesla (sadly) are reliable, relatively cheap and easy to use. ChargePlace Scotland (as was), cheap and widespread in Scotland, not always reliable though and at best 50kW.
Insurance
LV= they cover me for business use, not cheap but not expensive. They aren’t going to disappear overnight either.
Please itemise where you’re saving money (or not) owning & running an MG5 EV
As I am self-employed I bought mine for cash using the ‘100% first year tax claim incentive’. I paid £21k for an ex-demo car, list price was £34k. The monthly average running costs are approx. £130. Insurance is the same. I will lose a bit more in depreciation than an equivalent petrol car but the very low running costs offset that. You can only buy the old MG5 EV second-hand now, the new one is an SUV. If you can charge from home, then a second-hand MG5 EV is a fantastic value family car, if you can live with the annoying infotainment system.
