‘Happy BYD Dolphin Owner’ unsurprisingly drives a BYD Dolphin Comfort 60.4kWh, standard specification.
This is HBDO’s first electric car, they’ve owned the BYD Dolphin 1-2 years and drive 10,000-15,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 10,000-20,000 miles and they achieve 180 miles from an 80% charge.
Why did you choose this car?
I’m very happy with my Dolphin, it’s everything that I need from a car and more: practical, roomy and full of tech that I find very useful. I like the automatic handbrake, the front and rear sensors, 360° camera, the all-leather interior (well faux), the very easy-to-read instruments, the voice control is amazing, the winter schedule preheating is amazing too, no more cold seats! The full LED lights and auto main beam, the list goes on and on…
Positives
- No emissions
- comfortable
- very economical to run.
Negatives
- The only thing I’m not fond of is the rear seats when folded aren’t completely flat.
Compared to when you first bought the car, does your battery still charge at the same rate & do you still get the same range?
Yes, the same rate and more range as you learn how to drive an EV.
Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?
There were some white particles coming from the air vent with the AC on, took the car to the dealership and they fixed it under warranty.
Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about your BYD Dolphin
The preheating is amazing, set a start time and temperature in the app and when you’re ready to leave, the car is defrosted and the seating is warm!
What’s the biggest or funniest myth you’ve heard about EVs?
Range! You have to keep stopping to recharge, lol! My car can do 265 miles on a full charge, that’s London and back for me!
What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?
BYD Atto 2 (Comfort) – because it’s huge, easy to get in and out of at hip height, so much elbow room, and the range is well over 350 miles.
Home charging unit
Hypervolt Home Pro 3 (app-controlled) – I can’t think of any negative points, it looks very professional, does exactly what it should do and when it’s not in use it can be locked.
Electricity supplier & tariff
Intelligent Octopus Go (fixed) – it’s fantastic for both EV owners and non-EV owners alike; the savings are unbelievable, plus it integrates with my solar system.
What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?
Tesla Supercharger Network – simply the best speed of charging and if at the right time, the cheapest per kW too.
Insurance
Direct Line – this time I’ve gone with DL, very reasonable and no interest for paying monthly. Can’t think of any negative points.
Please itemise where you’re saving money (or not) owning & running a BYD Dolphin
- I used to spend £45 a week on petrol but now I spend £6.25 a week on electricity ⚡
- the insurance is less by £75 than my petrol car
- the road tax is the same.
