BMW i4 M50 2024 Owner Review

BMW i4 M50 2024 Owner Review

Ryan drives a BMW i4 M50 83.9kWh 2024 (536 bhp).

This is Ryan’s second electric car, he’s owned the i4 M50 1-2 years and drives 15,000-20,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 20,000-30,000 miles and he achieves 240 miles range from an 80% charge. Ryan added the M performance pack, heads up display, Harman Kardon Audio & 19″ alloys.

Why did you choose the BMW i4 M50?

  • Availability
  • range
  • performance.

Positives

It looks and feels like a regular ICE BMW to drive and the performance is on par with my M5. In terms of running costs (only charged at home), I’ve saved more in fuel than the car costs!

Negatives

  • It doesn’t auto lock when you exit the car
  • keys are super sensitive and regularly unlock the car from inside the home
  • could do with more space for luggage
  • seats uncomfortable on longer journeys
  • range at 100% is only around 220 miles in the worst of winter.

Compared to when you first bought the car, does your battery still charge at the same rate & do you still get the same range?

Yes & yes

Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?

The passenger head lamp had condensation build-up and it was replaced by BMW. It’s a regular issue with all 4 series BMWs. No other issues.

What are the standout technological features of the car?

The ability to get feedback from the road which barely any other EVs offer.

Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about your i4 M50

Other than running costs, it’s not really any better than any other car I’ve driven/owned. No standout delights, it’s just a car that gets the job done.

What’s the biggest or funniest myth you’ve heard about EVs?

  • Can’t travel far
  • costs too much to charge
  • can’t access chargers when needed – I commute a 211-mile round trip for work and charge at home for 6.5 pence per kWh. I have never had to use a public charger.

What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?

Mercedes GLC for range and technology. Unless Porsche release the Cayman EV with a decent range.

Electricity supplier & tariff

Intelligent Octopus Go – whenever I plug the car in, which is set to charge to 100% every time, smart charging automatically kicks in reducing all of my electric to 6.5 pence per kWh.

Do you use public charging networks?

No

Please itemise where you’re saving money (or not) owning & running a BMW i4 M50

  • Salary sacrifice lease – reduces income tax and NI (£450 per month)
  • no insurance costs (£600 per annum)
  • no servicing costs (£200 per annum)
  • no road tax costs (£50 per month)
  • no tyre costs (£2,000 per annum) as all included
  • no fuel costs (£600+ per month) as the lower rate charging saves me more across my household consumption than it costs me to run my car
  • not facing depreciation (£1,000+ per month) on a car I purchased

Total savings in excess of £2,000 a month for a car that costs £600 per month all in.
