Chris drives a KIA EV6 GT Line S AWD 77kWh 2024.
This is Chris’s second electric car, he’s owned the KIA EV6 from new and drives 20,000-30,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 5,000-10,000 miles and he achieves 304 miles from a full charge.
Why did you choose the KIA EV6?
Loved the styling and specification for the price, real value for money against brands like Audi and VW for similar specifications.
Positives
- Digital camera on instrument cluster for each indicator, makes it so easy in rain on motorway
- comfortable drive with a relaxed driving position
- love the external look of the car’s styling.
Negatives
- Not found anything I don’t like apart from no spare wheel option.
Compared to when you first bought the car, does your battery still charge at the same rate & do you still get the same range?
Still get the same range and more than manufacturers WLTP figures, in fact. It also still charges at the same rate.
Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?
No faults so far apart from a safety software update for the 12 volt battery. Reliability from my previous KIA PHEV was one of the reasons I bought the EV6.
What are the standout technological features of the car?
The digital mirror display on the dash even with standard style mirrors makes it so easy on the motorway in poor weather to see what’s in other lanes. Also, the ability to run 240 volt devices through a 3 pin plug socket in the back and also through the v2l from the charging socket.
Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about this electric car
Option to use the charging socket to run other devices such as charging an e-bike or in my case run the Ninja Woodfire electric grill from the car HV battery when we go out somewhere. All runs from the charging socket using the vehicle to load option.
What’s the biggest or funniest myth you’ve heard about EVs?
Has to be that the battery only lasts for 3 years and then needs replacing and that there are no charging stations anywhere.
What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?
MG Cyberster for it’s funky styling!
Home charging unit
Rolec – Positive is that I can charge overnight and use cheap electric rates. Negative is my charger is left available to charge while out at work as it’s not a smart unit so could be used by others if they were brave enough to risk trying to charge while I was out.
Electricity supplier & tariff
British Gas EV Charge tariff – cheap electric overnight so cheaper to charge. Only downside is remembering to change the charge times for when clocks go forward or back as British Gas don’t keep to the BST when clocks change so 12 midnight then becomes 1am start time.
What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?
InstaVolt and Pod Point are both simple to register, setup and get running quickly.
Insurer
AA – will be changing in September due to high policy cost against other insurers.
Please itemise where you’re saving money (or not) owning & running a KIA EV6
Worked out that I would be saving approx. £220 a month in fuel just for the work commute by running overnight electric charge. Servicing is included as part of the deal from KIA and as an electric vehicle road tax is currently £0.
