MG ZS EV 2023 electric car owner review

Jamie drives an MG ZS EV Trophy Long Range 72.6kWh 2023.

This is Jamie’s second electric car, he’s owned the MG ZS EV from new and drives 5,000-10,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 5,000-10,000 miles and he achieves 200 miles from a full charge.

Why did you choose the MG ZS EV?

My wife & I wanted a larger car than our Renault Zoe with a good range and at a good price. The MG ZS EV Long Range ticked all the boxes and more! When I was looking for a car the MG ZS EV was the cheapest car with a relatively large battery, 72.6kWh.

Positives

  • Cheap to run
  • large Battery
  • packed with Tech
  • comfortable
  • preconditioning via the app
  • V2L (vehicle to load).

Negatives

  • There’s no option for 1 pedal driving, the car constantly creeps
  • auto cruise control does not use regen when slowing down
  • cannot schedule preconditioning.

Compared to when you first bought the car, does your battery still charge at the same rate & do you still get the same range?

I rarely use rapid chargers and only charge at home where possible. I haven’t noticed a drop in charge rate.

The range has only changed with the weather, as with all EVs the winter brings lower range. Other than this no changes noticed.

Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?

The V2L module was not fitted to my car from new. When this was pointed out to MG they took the car and fitted the module that should have been in free of charge. Now V2L is present and working. No other faults (yet).

What are the standout technological features of the car?

  • The driver assist features are great, auto cruise control with lane keeping and traffic jam assist are things I use everyday
  • the car has V2L capabilities, great for camping or power cuts as you can power any 240v device from the car with the adapter
  • the app is also great, you can use your phone as a digital key, remotely lock and unlock the car and view the status of everything like the doors and tyre pressures.

Surprise us! Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about this electric car

  • There’s a USB port for power behind the rear view mirror for powering dashcams
  • there’s a bird’s eye view and a 3D view available using the cars external cameras.

What’s the biggest or funniest myth you’ve heard about EVs?

  • The batteries won’t last 3 years
  • they catch fire (stats show fossil fuel cars are more likely to burn).

What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?

Not looking to get something new for a few years but the MG4 EV XPower has caught my eye. It’s a lot of power for the money!

Home charging unit

Ohme Home Pro – I got this to get the Intelligent Octopus Go tariff (7.5p/kWh). It’s just OK, works well with the Octopus tariff but it’s unclear in the app what power is going into the car, it refers to it in miles instead of % or kWh.

Electricity supplier & tariff

Intelligent Octopus Go – has 6 hours of cheap rate (7.5p/kWh) overnight and sometimes gives more depending on the demand on the grid. The only downside is the expensive standing charge but that’s the same with many tariffs.

Do you use public charging networks?

No

Please itemise where you’re saving money (or not) owning & running an MG ZS EV

If I were to drive 10,000 miles in an electric car it would cost me £250 on my overnight rate. The same in an efficient diesel would cost around 4x more. Road tax is £0, servicing is around the same and insurance is less than £100 difference.
