Tony drives a Jaguar I-PACE HSE 90kWh 2021.
This is Tony’s second electric car, he’s owned the Jaguar I-PACE 2-3 years and drives 10,000-15,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 20,000-30,000 miles and he achieves 230 miles from a full charge.
Why did you choose the Jaguar I-PACE?
UK designed by Ian Callum who is simply so talented. I love the subtle lines and that it feels like a proper car with proper knobs for the things you need to adjust while driving. I love the air suspension, the sports seats, the self-sealing tyres, the size in that it is not too big and not too small.
Positives – List 3 or more reasons why you love this electric car
- Driving it makes me smile!
Negatives – List 3 or more things that you really don’t like about this electric car
- Slow charging, however that is to prolong the battery life
- the lack of a spare wheel, though self-sealing tyres largely cover that issue.
Compared to when you first bought the car, does your battery still charge at the same rate & do you still get the same range?
The range after 3 years and 30,000 miles is no different from new.
Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?
Thankfully, no.
What are the standout technological features of the car?
- Acceleration: 0-60 4.5 secs
- air suspension
- wading through 60cm depth of water, it will go where a Land Rover will go
- quiet.
Surprise us! Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about this electric car
- It will go through 60cm water, down rutted tracks, have automatic wheel slip sensing so great on mud or snow
- panoramic roof but tinting stops the car getting hot
- matrix headlights.
What’s the biggest or funniest myth you’ve heard about EVs?
Biggest myth is that dealers know about them! So few technicians seem to know how to deal with problems that owners have seen. Our I-PACE occasionally comes up with odd messages and the dealers take them as read and take the car in for months when actually the issue is that the car is so sensitive about the battery reading. So that as soon as the 12v battery starts to get tired, the voltage drops which gives rise to these silly messages.
What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?
Whatever JLR plan to show next year and Porsche but I would prefer a JLR product.
Home charging unit – outline both positive & negative elements
Rolec (basic) charger – however. changing to Octopus I think I will need to swop to OMIE.
Electricity supplier & tariff – outline both positive & negative elements
Just changed to Octopus.
What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?
I joined bp pulse but found their stations have so few chargers that I’ve given up on them. Also, I so rarely charge away from home. Cornwall Services was a great surprise with 8 fast and 8 slow chargers but when I used them the fast chargers were actually only doing 7kW due to a short-term issue.
Insurer – outline both positive & negative elements
Churchill Plus – seems to suit my criteria.
Please itemise where you’re saving money (or not) owning & running a Jaguar I-PACE
I have been using OVO charging at home until they stopped working with Jaguar, so I was paying 4p a mile instead of 20p a mile for the average petrol car, so saving me £1,920 a year. The 20,000 mile/2 year service at a Jaguar dealer was under £300. No road tax to pay and no congestion charge either.
