Hyundai Kona Electric 2021: Public charging review

Hyundai Kona Electric 2021: Public charging review

willow shares his experience of public charging with his Hyundai Kona 66kWh.

What do you think of the UK public charging network in general?

Really poor reliability. When you pull into a petrol station you can be sure of getting fuel from the pumps. There is no standardised connectivity, no standard payment method and no guarantee that the charge will actually be completed.

What and where are your favourite UK public chargers?

Pod Point seems to work OK for me but you need to get the app on your phone to start a charge.

What’s been your best experience with a UK public charger?

IONITY works very well as it accepts contactless payment and there’s no need to have an app installed to achieve a charge. The government should set limits for public charging, as they are supposed to be encouraging people to switch to electric over fossil fuel.

What’s been your worst experience with a UK public charger?

I went to a charger in Kingston University which required a special card to start charging. Didn’t have that card so had to scuttle off to try to find one which would work.

What’s got to change about public charging in the UK to get more people driving electric cars?

Reliability, standard payment methods and lots more availability of higher power charging.
