MG5 EV: Getting started with an electric car

MG5 EV: Getting started with an electric car

Neil F drives an MG5 EV LR and shares how he got into electric.

Why did you buy the MG5 EV?

To replace a 14-yr-old Skoda diesel.

What got you into an electric car in the first place?

  • Greener driving
  • family car for weekends & holidays
  • car-share club was not suitable for most of our needs.

Initially, what did you find most confusing about electric car ownership and how did you solve that?

Range, charging speeds, why so many were SUV with small boots, never driven an automatic before & just how advanced (digitally) the controls were. I just had to plunge in and I had test-driven some hybrids first & any new car was going to be this complicated.

What sources of information helped you e.g. people, groups, websites etc?

Basic motoring magazines, talking to neighbours with EVs etc.

What are your top 3 pieces of advice for those people considering their first electric car?

Change your mindset about refuelling from weekly/monthly to daily/weekly

there are so many charging companies & apps which offer charger locations & routes, that I haven’t got a favourite

for long distances, plan your route & consider how many chargers have they got & how fast are they.
