Renault Megane E-Tech 2023 electric car owner review

Nameless drives a Renault Megane E-Tech 60kWh 2023.

This is Nameless’s first electric car, he’s owned the Megane E-Tech from new and drives 5,000-10,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 1,000-5,000 miles and he achieves 260 miles from a full charge.

Why did you choose the Renault Megane E-Tech?

There aren’t many hatchback EVs in this price bracket. The Megane E-Tech stood out as having good styling, good range and was getting good reviews.

Positives – List 3 or more reasons why you love this electric car

  • Looks good
  • well laid out dash and instruments
  • responsive engine that bleeds the power in initially to avoid wheel spin
  • good build quality.

Negatives – List 3 or more things that you really don’t like about this electric car

  • Alarm issues – I, like many, have had issues with the alarm going off without reason. Cars are still being shipped with this issue even though Renault know about it and what the fix is.
  • lack of a flat floor in the boot – the boot is deep but it’s difficult to lift heavy items in due to the lip and even harder to lift them out
  • issues with charging – the Megane does not like having a charge interrupted. This is especially an issue when using chargers like the myenergi where you try to use excess solar generation or where you need to schedule charging to make use of cheap rates. Renault are aware of this but are dragging their feet when it comes to releasing the fix even though the fix is complete and should be ready to release.

Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?

  • Alarm issues – alarm going off for no reason (the volumetric sensors are the problem). Not fixed as yet.
  • charger compatibility issues – not fixed as Renault won’t release the update for reasons known only to them.

What are the standout technological features of the car?

  • The integration with Google Maps is great. Input a charger as a destination and the battery preconditions itself to allow optimum charging on arrival.
  • preheat/cool function is also great. Allows you to defrost the car remotely so you don’t have to sit in a freezing car to do it.

Surprise us! Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about this electric car

The most surprising thing is Renault’s poor customer service. They have done a lot to create a great car but then let the customer down with awful aftersales support.

What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?

Audi e-tron and Nissan ARIYA. Slightly bigger and not a Renault so no need to have to deal with Renault’s abysmal aftersales support team.

Home charging unit – outline both positive & negative elements

myenergi zappi 2 which itself is great. The issue is with how the Megane interacts with it. Renault have cocked up with the interface, especially around interrupted chargers and seem reluctant to fix it.

Electricity supplier & tariff – outline both positive & negative elements

I am on Octopus Go. Cannot use Intelligent Octopus as neither the zappi or the Megane are compatible. The zappi should shortly be compatible but until Renault sort the issues with interrupted chargers this won’t help. Having the 4-hour cheap slot is great overnight but I can’t take full advantage of it due to the issues already described.

Do you use public charging networks?

No

Insurer – outline both positive & negative elements

I use Aviva. The premium increase over my previous ICE vehicle was negligible. Haven’t had to claim so cannot comment on that.

Please itemise where you’re saving money (or not) owning & running a Renault Megane E-Tech

Savings are primarily on fuel. I have solar and I can usually get enough charge through that alone. I have done 2,000 miles in the car and spent £40 so far on charging.
