MG5 EV 2022 electric car owner review

Alan Bradshaw drives an MG5 EV 61kWh 2022.

This is Alan’s second electric car, he’s owned the MG5 EV less than a year and drives 5,000-10,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 0-500 miles and he achieves 240 miles from a full charge.

 

Why did you choose the MG5 EV?

This is an estate car with a large load carrying capacity. This was my first criteria. Secondly, my daughter is quite short of stature and struggles to see out of the majority of cars from the back seat. This car has a quite high rear seat so she is very pleased with this aspect.

 

The car’s stance on the road is good with good ground clearance. This is my wife’s favourite part of driving it as it gives good visibility all around, especially with the narrower roof pillars. The range is good, with all our charging being done at home (except for holidays), we only need to top up weekly. Overall, the car performs exactly as we wanted it to and has been a good investment so far.

Apple CarPlay does not work & Android Auto does not work!

 

What are the standout technological features of the car?

Nothing standout, it just does what I expect of it with no fuss or drama.

Home charging unit – outline both positive & negative elements 

Rolec charging unit – this is a dumb charger that us early adopters bought. I have heard of many of these being sold on eBay as faulty but ours has given us good service for six years. Because it is not ‘smart’, there are no timers or charge monitors in the unit itself, it leaves the car to do that side of the job and I have no issues with that. If anything, I would like to upgrade to something like a zappi that will put my excess solar to better use.

 

Please outline both positive & negative elements of your electricity supplier & tariff?

I do not have an EV tariff, this is something I am actively researching.

 

What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?

The only issues I’ve had with public charging are the queues on the motorway. Other than that, no issues. I have actively campaigned to have all chargers available using a chip and pin card, something which should have been in place from the start. I am glad this is now a reality.

 

Insurer – outline both positive & negative elements 

I have no issues with my insurer. I modified my policy part way through the year and my policy actually went down. I use quotemehappy.com for all my cars.

 

Please itemise where you’re saving money (or not) owning & running an MG5 EV

I can’t estimate how much I am saving. I went from a diesel six years ago that was costing me £150 per month in fuel plus road tax and servicing costs. Now I have no road tax and small bills due to my solar panels, so it is difficult to estimate how much I am spending on ‘fuelling’ the car. I would say that I feel much better off because I don’t have to go and queue down at the petrol station anymore. The extra effort of plugging in once a week is well worth it!
