Top 5 Medium-size Electric Cars – Summer 2022

Top 5 Medium-size Electric Cars - Autumn 2022

Welcome to Electric Road’s ‘Top 5 Medium-size Electric Cars’ Summer 2022.

At Electric Road, our key objective is to be as useful as we possibly can be for those considering their first/next electric car and related products & services. Finding the right electric car is clearly the most important part of the process! In an ever-growing market there are many considerations (budget-aside) such as should you buy new or used and how you are actually going to use the car.

Owner Ratings

Based on the 5-bolt rating system from over 1,800 Owner Reviews received up to and including 30th June, Electric Road (ER) has extracted the top 5 highest-rated medium-size electric cars. Within the review forms, all owners have to provide a bolt rating out of 5 on their current car. We’ve then worked out the average rating for each make & model.

We hope this summary of EV owners’ opinions will help you make the right decision when the time comes to purchase your first or next electric car. Given how quickly the electric vehicle market is growing, the ‘Top 5 Medium-size Electric Cars’ will be updated each quarter ensuring you have the latest trends from the ER audience.

1. Kia e-Niro

Top 5 Medium-size Electric Cars - Summer 2022

The Kia e-Niro is our winner for Medium-size Electric Car, Summer 2022 as it ticks a lot of boxes for owners, namely value for money, range & space.

Here’s what some of our owners think about their Kia e-Niro:

‘The Kia e-Niro was in my top three shortlist, alongside the Hyundai Kona and Tesla Model 3. I chose the e-Niro based on best value for money overall, taking into account range and cost. Other key considerations were cabin and boot space (excellent) and build quality (excellent). It’s a good looking car too and in the realms of ‘normal’ i.e. just looks like a car. Short lead times played a factor too. I had never even seen a Kia e-Niro in the metal before I put down my deposit, never mind had a test drive or even sat in one. I knew the drive experience would be superb, having driven many electric cars. Delighted with my choice.’

‘I wanted a car that happened to be electric, that could carry 4 people comfortably and 5 occasionally. I also needed a car that could carry items on the roof rack, had a sunroof and could get me about 240 miles approx. once every couple of months.’

e-Niro 4+ 2021, Chris Swallow. Read the full Owner Review here

‘I have always loved cars and design is important to me, so slightly surprising I’m now in an e-Niro! Previously I have only owned European cars (BMW, VW and Volvo). I’m not a huge fan of the looks but the e-Niro ticked critical boxes for me as someone who doesn’t have off-street parking and charges using a cable gulley through the pavement. Namely, a big battery and brilliant efficiency (meaning less worrying about being able to park outside my house to charge) as well as a charge port at the front rather than side (meaning less chance of the cable being knocked by other cars or pedestrians).

I also liked all the extras that you get which for me makes it very good value for money e.g. heated and ventilated seats, electric driver seat, glass sunroof, full leather, 10 inch infotainment screen, fantastic self-driving abilities etc.’

2. Hyundai Kona Electric

Top 5 Medium-size Electric Cars - Summer 2022

The Kona Electric has similar attributes to it’s sister model, the e-Niro: economical, good range and level(s) of tech.

Here’s what some of our owners think about their Kona Electric:

‘This car was a revelation when it came out, the technology and specification were superior to everything else but Tesla.’

  • ‘Range – I wanted to be able to make the 180 mile round trip to my nearest city (Newcastle) without charging…it’s not very ‘rock and roll’ to come out of a gig at 23:00 and start the hunt for a charger!
  • Price – it was one of the few sensibly priced EVs when I bought it
  • Dealer – good previous experience of the dealer.’

3. Volvo XC40 Recharge

Top 5 Medium-size Electric Cars - Summer 2022

To some, a surprising entry into the Top 5 but owners love the XC40’s quality, safety levels & power.

Here’s what some of our owners think about their XC40 Recharge:

‘I’ve owned Volvos for 25 years and when I was sure I wanted an EV, I obviously looked to Volvos’s first ever EV. I also looked at Tesla, Kia, Nissan, Hyundai and BMW but what I needed or wanted, I only got with the Volvo: space, quality, power, safety, room for a big dog and the feeling to be ‘at home’. I never regretted it one single day.’

4. Citroen e-C4

Top 5 Medium-size Electric Cars - Summer 2022

Owners love how well-built the e-C4 feels, how comfortable it is & how surprisingly spacious it is too.

Here’s what some of our owners think about their Citroen e-C4:

‘Very well built and a huge step up for the brand. Very comfortable and quiet. The suspension is brilliant for the ride, while the finance deal for all the features getting on the car was a no brainer.’

e-C4 100kW Shine Plus 50kWh 2021, John. Read the full Owner Review here

‘I chose the e-C4 for several reasons. It has decent range although not the best in its class. It’s very comfortable to drive. It’s easy to drive and get along with. It seems better built than some of its competitors. Finally, it’s surprisingly roomy, even compared to it’s Stellantis Group siblings. One slightly weird thing that made us choose it was the amount of room for people’s feet in the back. A lot of its competitors have leg room but your feet don’t fit under the front seats. I know it sounds odd but it’s worth checking because it can make a big difference to the comfort of people in the back!”

‘We felt that due to all the changes coming in it was the best way to go and we are glad we went full EV. We were frightened at first but since getting the car in December I worry less as I can plan my long journeys with Zap-Map and life is now a joy with the Citroen e-C4. It is lovely and quiet to drive, very comfortable, good on the mileage per charge and it’s already working out cheaper than our diesel car.

The Citroen dealer let us have the car for 1/2 day on the test drive which was great. The vehicle has plenty of gadgets, it’s the top-of-the-range Shine+ model. I would never go back to a fossil fuel car again, the experience of an electric car gets better every day you drive it. EVs will only improve as time goes on, but I’m now hooked and don’t look back.’

5. MG ZS EV

Top 5 Medium-size Electric Cars - Summer 2022

The MG ZS EV represents great value for money for many owners with lots of added extras as standard.

Here’s what some of our owners think about their MG ZS EV:

  • ‘Best value in terms of new cost price divided by range
  • Largest car available at the time for a similar price
  • Excellent exterior finish and specification for the money
  • Spacious interior and comfort
  • Ample performance, not that I use it
  • Easy to keep wheels clean
  • Low level of motor and transmission noise compared with ICE vehicle’

‘Was a good priced car with lots of added extras for the money. I felt it was a good start into the world of electric cars.’

Trophy 2022, Debp. Read the full Owner Review here

‘It has everything you could need on an EV, heated seats and a tilting sunroof are both things that I use often to regulate temperature and save on power consumption. The car provides on average 150 miles of genuine charge, more in the summer and less in the winter. I don’t exceed 50 miles per day and gain enough charge overnight on my home charger.’
