VW ID.7 GTX Owner Review: 17 Months with Volkswagen’s Electric Cruiser (Leslie)

I decided to lease the 2025 Volkswagen ID.7 GTX after seeing a discount lease price and watching various reviews on YouTube. This is my very first electric car, and I have owned it for between one and two years, covering 10,000 to 15,000 miles in that time. While it excels as a comfortable, fast cruiser, my experience has been heavily marred by basic design flaws and virtually non-existent customer support.

Specifications and Performance

My car is the standard-specification 2025 ID.7 GTX and has an 86kWh usable battery. It features a dual-motor, four-wheel-drive setup that produces a formidable 335 bhp and launches the car from 0-62 mph in just 5.4 seconds.

Out on the road, the four-wheel drive puts the power down brilliantly, meaning there is little to no wheel spin even when pushing the car to its maximum. It is incredibly silent, the headlights are excellent, and the comfort over bad roads is exceptional. I also really appreciate the GTX seats and the complete lack of brake dust, even when braking very hard. When it comes to standout tech features, there is nothing specific I find overly impressive—it really just depends on what you are used to.

Range and Home Charging

My estimated annual mileage sits between 5,000 and 10,000 miles. From an 80% charge, I generally achieve an average range of 210 miles, and the battery’s performance currently remains OK, compared to when it was new.

I charge the car entirely at home and do not use public charging networks at all. My home charging unit is generally fine, though it occasionally fails to link, and I am not entirely sure whether the fault lies with the car or the charger itself. When it comes to my energy supplier, I use E.ON. In June, thanks to a special government discount, my home charging economy was incredibly cheap, dropping as low as 0.038p per kWh (price correct as of November 2026). Today, at 80-plus years of age, I don’t know my current tariff rate and I am not bothered by it; the fuel is a small amount, and I am just enjoying life!

Frustrations, Faults, and Customer Service

Unfortunately, the negatives with this car are significant, and Volkswagen’s lack of interest is exactly why they are failing to keep customers.

Firstly, UK cars have a different specification compared to EU models. EU models can record camera footage directly onto a memory stick. I asked the salesperson about this before purchasing, and he simply called it up on his computer. I still have a photo of that interaction, yet after calling the Milton Keynes office about the missing feature, I am still waiting for an answer 17 months later. The customer care is abysmal; when the car’s internet failed for weeks, I had to phone three times, and nobody ever reached out to update me on the progress of the fix.

There are also severe hardware and design concerns. The haptic door opening and closing system frequently fails to work in the rain, forcing you to press it many times. Worse still, if a door isn’t closed properly, the entire system can fail completely. This has happened to me twice—even with the key on my person, nothing happens. Because the rubber door seals are so firm, the door can only be secured by pushing it from the outside, which is highly dangerous. Additionally, both electric motors have drain plugs fitted as standard because coolant often leaks into the stator. While the car has a three-year warranty, fixing a leak outside of that period will result in a huge bill of around £10,000.

What Are You Buying Next?

If I were to trade my keys in tomorrow, I haven’t entirely made up my mind, but my next vehicle definitely won’t be a VW. At the moment, a BYD is perhaps at the top of my list.
