This is Darran’s first electric car, he’s owned the Model Y from new and does between 10,000 – 15,000 miles per year. The current mileage is under 1,000 miles and he achieves 280 miles range from a full charge.

Why did you choose the Tesla Model Y?

- Functionality – remote control features (heating, charging, security etc), Tesla auto-pilot, iPad-like control system
- Styling – have always loved the look of Teslas and the Model Y is, I feel, the best looking model yet
- Performance – fast and handles very well.
Negatives – List 3 or more things that you really don’t like about this electric car.
- Cost – the Tesla Model Y was supposed to be an affordable family SUV but it’s price (for the long range AWB and only variant currently available) is anything but
- Tech niggles – owning a Tesla takes a bit of getting used to. The ability to use a smartphone as a key is a curse as well as a blessing. For example, if your phone lives in your back pocket it may not unlock the door every time.
- iPad-on-wheels – the lack of physical buttons will be hard for some people to adjust to and despite the ‘nearly works’ voice commands, sometimes simple things are buried in menus. Unlike an iPhone, there’s no way to search for a setting.

Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?
Passenger door alignment is slightly out. Although Chinese made Teslas have a higher build quality than previous USA-made cars, there can still sometimes be minor issues. Service issues can be opened using the Tesla app and in my case I have a mobile technician calling in a few days to look at the issue.
What are the standout tech features of your Tesla Model Y?
- Efficiency – no other make comes close to Tesla on getting maximum range
- Route planning – that integrates the Supercharger network, tells you where and how long you’ll need to charge and even how many charging spaces are currently available!
- ICE includes Spotify (free using Tesla’s account) and Netflix
- App control over charging (when, how fast), security, climate control etc.
- Tesla open architecture that allows 3rd party software and hardware developers to create add-on apps and devices.

Basic auto-pilot that’s included in the base price makes motorway driving (mostly) effortless thanks to adaptive cruise control and lane following. In those moments where you have to look away from the road, even for a second, when accidents can easily happen this car will keep you safe.
What electric car are you interested in next and why?
The Tesla ‘Model 2’ when it eventually goes into production as this should have a similar range but be smaller and cheaper.
What home charging unit do you use? Would you recommend it to others and why?
Rolec 32A/7.3kW – a bit old school and was installed way back in 2015. No frills but works OK with a type 1 to type 2 adaptor.

What home electricity supplier & tariff do you use? Would you recommend it to others and why?
E.ON fixed rate until 2024. Nothing special but managed to get a price fix before prices went crazy. In the future may look at Octopus now electricity consumption has increased.

Tesla superchargers, everything else is hit and miss.

Admiral – the cheapest quote for the Model Y and then took a MultiCar policy for my wife’s car and got a substantial discount (~20%).
