Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 2023 electric car owner review

Stewart N drives a Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 2023.

This is Stewart’s second electric car, he’s owned the Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 from new and drives 10,000-15,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 1,000-5,000 miles and he achieves 250 miles from a full charge.

Why did you choose the Mercedes-AMG EQE?

My wife has a Tesla which I love driving but the interior is too sparse for my liking. I tested the standard EQE but it felt a bit gutless but when the AMG came out, I had a test drive and loved the acceleration & interior fit out. It handles well for such a heavy car and driving it puts a smile on my face!

Positives – List 3 or more reasons why you love this electric car

  • Power
  • torque
  • acceleration.

Negatives – List 3 or more things that you really don’t like about this electric car

Wish it had a tailgate like the EQS and some interior plastics are a bit cheap and creaky occasionally.

Compared to when you first bought the car, does your battery still charge at the same rate & do you still get the same range?

Yes, charges well at home and on public chargers.

Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?

No faults but some features take a while to figure out.

What are the standout technological features of the car?

The Hyperscreen is pretty good (highly configurable, responsive and clear) once you get used to how it works! Great heads-up display, great grip from the traction control and a really good sound system.

Surprise us! Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about this electric car

Driving it puts a smile on my face – the power, handling and technology!

What’s the biggest or funniest myth you’ve heard about EVs?

The issue over range. You do have to charge them more often than you would fill up an ICE car, which takes a bit of getting used to. But if you charge overnight regularly on a home charger and on a low tariff, it is inexpensive to run and faster public chargers are relatively quick, so you stop more often and for longer but after a few weeks it just seems normal

What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?

Too early to guess but hopefully next generation batteries will emerge in the next 3 years and will have greater range and faster charging.

Home charging unit – outline both positive & negative elements

Tesla Wall Connector – for my wife’s car but works perfectly on my Mercedes. It’s a 32A 3 Phase (according to the installation manual) though we are running it at 6kW.

Electricity supplier & tariff – outline both positive & negative elements

Intelligent Octopus Go – They are great at communication, flexible and have relatively good rates especially overnight. The only negative is that you effectively pay a month in advance but that’s life!

What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?

  • Tesla
  • ChargePoint (not very fast but effective)
  • GRIDSERVE.

Please itemise where you’re saving money (or not) owning & running a Mercedes-AMG EQE

Insurance is about £20 a month more than my previous Range Rover Sport but I am saving around £50-£60 a month on fuel (home charging overnight on cheap tariff).
