Mercedes EQA 2021 electric car owner review

Mercedes-Benz EQA 2021 electric car owner review

Graham drives a Mercedes EQA 300 66.5kWh 2021.

This is Graham’s first electric car, he’s owned the EQA 300 from new and drives 10,000-15,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 20,000-30,000 miles and he achieves 260 miles from a full charge.

Why did you choose the Mercedes EQA?

We bought the EQA 300 because we wanted a small SUV that could tow a heavy trailer. The car is all-wheel drive and can tow up to 1.8 tonnes. Also, we have owned other Mercedes and like the quality of finish and comfort.

Positives – List 3 or more reasons why you love this electric car

  • Range is excellent – in warmer months we can get 4.5 miles per kWh which equates to a full charge range of 300 miles. Even in mid-winter this only drops to about 3.5 miles per kWh on a long trip. (WLTP quoted range equates to about 3.8 miles per kWh)
  • excellent retractable tow bar with 3 different widths of view from the rear camera
  • really relaxing and comfortable to drive long distances
  • fast charging (up to 100kW) – makes it easy to recharge whilst having a coffee.

Negatives – List 3 or more things that you really don’t like about this electric car

  • Nothing to dislike that’s turned up in over 20,000 miles!

Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?

Only minor problem was that the car didn’t want to release the charger cable for awhile after there was a fault (probably data exchange error) in the charging process. After some time it did let go!

What are the standout technological features of the car?

  • Excellent forward-facing radar for adaptive cruise control
  • radars on door mirrors warn of blind spot traffic
  • rear radar warns of crossing traffic when reversing
  • forward camera picks up speed limit and no overtaking sign information
  • because the dash consists of 2 large LCD displays everything is selectable and we use different profiles for UK (mph etc.) & Ireland (km etc.)
  • the Mercedes Me phone app lets you see vehicle status (including lock status, charge state and charging rate & tyre pressures from sensors inside the wheels) and you can send destinations to the vehicle’s sat nav from phone navigation apps.

Surprise us! Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about this electric car

The rear-view camera is concealed behind the Mercedes badge, which keeps it from getting dirty. If you’ve set a destination in the sat nav not only does it give an estimate for charge at destination but it will also show the maximum speed to drive in order to reach the destination with a reasonable amount of charge.

What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?

Happy with what we have and we intend to keep it long-term so are normally restricting charging to 80% so as to maximise battery life.

Home charging unit – outline both positive & negative elements

Andersen A2 – works well and blends in well with the walls on our house.

Electricity supplier & tariff – outline both positive & negative elements

We are currently stuck on a tariff that doesn’t differentiate between peak and off-peak times.

What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?

In the UK we use GRIDSERVE & IONITY and in Ireland ESB. Our only really bad experiences have been at Cobham Services on the M25 where there just aren’t enough chargers and the layout makes any attempt at sensible queuing very difficult.

Please itemise where you’re saving money (or not) owning & running a Mercedes EQA

  • About £1,000 a year saving in fuel costs
  • £300 or so in road fund
  • about £100 a year in saving.

So, about £120 a month, compared to our previous diesels.
