Provide your overall rating for the charging unit

Which company installed it and would you recommend them?

Voy Electrical Services – yes!

How much did you pay for your unit and installation?

£850

Why did you purchase the evec VEC01?

Only sensibly priced new unit at £370. It was an easy install with no manufacturer’s authorisation, I used my local EV electrician. Simple, neat and big enough to wire inside.

List 3 or more points that you like about the charging unit

  • It can charge from the unit button if wi-fi or the App are down and can be run as a dumb charger if needed in the future
  • the scheduler works to only charge between 00:30 and 04:30; just plug in whenever and it switches on and off with cheap rate
  • no LCD display just the simple blue and green light ring.

List 3 or more points that you don’t like about the charging unit

  • The App is quite simplistic and doesn’t record charging records reliably
  • it can’t deal with solar but then I’m not parked in the day and don’t yet have solar.

Outline any faults you have experienced with the unit

None

Tell us about your home charging routine

Daily use, mostly local journeys but with some 100-mile overnight trips. I average 150 to 200 miles a week and charge in a courtyard where I don’t park in the day.

I  plug in when I need to charge maybe 2 x week and the scheduler is set on auto charge for daily cheap rate times if the car is plugged in (30kwh charged in a morning).

I charge away on a granny charger and public charging if needed to get home. I’m happy to arrive back with just a few miles left as I know all the incoming local chargers if I wasn’t going to make it.

If you were buying a new charging unit now, what would you buy and why?

Maybe an Ohme as it links to Octopus’s Intelligent tariff but I might get the same again as it’s now even cheaper at £360. It’s by far the most sensibly-priced charging unit.

Tell us about your electricity provider and tariff. Would you recommend them?

Octopus Go – great App, it can separate up charging from the household quite easily as the billing is in 30 minute segments. Costs maybe £5 a week for 50kWh which under 3p a mile, nearly nothing!

Are you part of a charger-sharing scheme for those who don’t have their own charger?

No
