MG4 EV 2022 electric car owner review

MG4 EV 2022 electric car owner review

Chris P drives a MG4 EV Trophy 2022.

This is Chris’s first electric car, he’s owned the MG4 EV from new and drives 5,000-10,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 1,000-5,000 miles and he achieves 230 miles from a full charge.

Why did you choose the MG4 EV?

Right size, enough range and faster charging than many competitors. Very competitive price and you can actually buy one (unlike the IONIQ 5 that I got fed up of waiting for). The car is also good to drive.

Positives – List 3 or more reasons why you love this electric car

  • Range
  • price
  • charge speed.

Negatives – List 3 or more things that you really don’t like about this electric car

  • Nannying safety ‘aids’ that you cannot easily disable
  • poor radio interface on the entertainment system
  • slightly harsh ride (due to tyres?).

Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?

Passenger door handle keyless entry failed so awaiting replacement handle. Dealer very helpful.

What are the standout technological features of the car?

Charging speed is very good. Good level of equipment as standard including adaptive cruise, cameras and useful warning systems for blind spot, front and rear traffic etc.

Surprise us! Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about this electric car

Two buttons on the steering wheel can be configured for your choice of quick access functions (e.g. to adjust the climate control or driving modes).

What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?

Only just bought this car, my next car has probably not yet been launched.

Home charging unit – outline both positive & negative elements

Ohme Pro – compatible with Intelligent Octopus cheap rate electricity tariff. Compact design, looks inoffensive and has a fixed charge cable. The Ohme smartphone app is easy to use.

Electricity supplier & tariff – outline both positive & negative elements

Overnight charge rate is cheap (currently 10p per kWh) but daytime rate is higher than on the standard tariff (currently 42p) Stills works out cheaper to use Intelligent Octopus for me with an average of approx. 21p per kWh. Obviously depends on personal use patterns.

What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?

Local Tesla charger is open to other manufacturers. It’s convenient, being close to a Waitrose and the pricing is competitive. I’ve also used InstaVolt, which is pricier than Tesla for me but worked fine.

Insurer – outline both positive & negative elements

Flow – decent price. No experience of customer service so far (hope never to have to contact them 😃).

Please itemise where you’re saving money (or not) owning & running a MG4 EV

Saving approx. £1,000 a year in fuel costs. My MG4 EV came with 3 year’s free servicing, so a saving of £2-300 a year there. Saving of £165 road tax. Insurance similar to previous car – total saving approx. £1,300 pa.
