MINI Electric 2022: Getting started with an electric car

David Rushton drives a MINI Electric Level 3 (Cooper SE) 2022 and shares how he got started with his electric car.

Why did you buy the MINI Electric?

My wife had previously owned a MINI Coupe SD and when I changed my previous car I bought a new MINI Clubman JCW 306hp. I’d been interested in EVs for a while and the running cost of the Clubman was starting to hit our wallet. The kind of journeys were just around town! 4 miles here, 4 miles there and it was toppling out at 20mpg.

Had a test of the MINI SE, and was pleasantly surprised. It was so smooth and although not as fast as the Clubman, wolf in sheep’s clothing, still amazingly nippy around town. I put my order in for a Level 3 and after a few delays I picked it up in October 2022. Can’t believe I’ve taken to it so quickly. Some extras were cancelled due to the chip shortage but I’m very happy with it. I reckon it’s costing me 3p/pm to run which equates to about £30 per month at the moment. The Clubman was £150-£200 per month in petrol. An amazing difference!

What sources of information helped you e.g. people, groups, websites etc?

YouTube and Facebook specific forums. None of my family or friends have an EV.

What are your top 3 pieces of advice for those people considering their first electric car?

Research and test drive and above all, can it fit in your day to day driving?
