Hyundai IONIQ 5 2022 - Road trip report: Essex to Bournemouth

Paul Benscher drove from Essex to Bournemouth in his Hyundai IONIQ 5 73kWh 2022.

Introducing your road trip in your Hyundai IONIQ 5

I was driving from Essex to Bournemouth to attend a funeral early the following morning. I left with a full charge showing 320 miles. With a stop for food on the way, I arrived with no problems. The following morning, I had to make visits to members of the bereaved family and then attend the funeral. I then left for Essex with about 100+ plus miles available.

I knew I was able to charge at several service stations on the way back but boy was I WRONG! I visited 3 service stations and none had a single charger working. I was now down to 45 miles. With the help of the on-board app, I was able to find a Shell Station near Basingstoke with a working charger. There, I was able to get a fast charge and then got home safely.

My concern is why is one company being allowed to supply the charging system in one location and not have any working? I think the market should be opened up to allow more than one company to supply. I hope this would overcome the problem of nothing working because as time goes on the demand for charging will be even greater.

The car was perfect, very comfortable and received many compliments on the journey.

As a footnote, a friend drove her EV from Portugal to Birmingham without a single problem till they got to the UK where they encountered 2 sites near Dover not working.
