Tesla Model 3 – Owner Review Guide

Why did you choose the Tesla Model 3?

I think the Model 3 is the best Tesla & the best EV today. Whether you want to drive locally or for ‘000s of miles, the Model 3 can handle/take on & beat any piston car in any price bracket with better performance, practicality, refinement, tech, efficiency range & super fast-charging.

Tesla Model 3 Long Range 2020, John

  • Performance – blimey, it’s quick
  • Comfort & driving – very relaxed, great visibility
  • Range & charging – Supercharging is FAST and really convenient
  • Interior – I love the minimalist interior, there’s loads of space.

Tesla Model 3 Long Range 2021, Paul

  • No internal buttons
  • Very comfortable
  • Driver feedback through the steering is like a vehicle of a much higher value
  • Handling is fantastic.

Negatives – List 3 or more things that you really don’t like about this car?

  • AI features are not very reliable
  • Rain sensor, auto high beams and autopilot all fail regularly
  • Navigation is very poor compared to Google Maps
  • No screen in front of steering wheel makes it hard/dangerous to control wipers and observe limits while driving.

Tesla Model 3 SR+2019, Cal

  • The touchscreen can be fiddly – it’s not always easy to find what you are looking for
  • The navigation app doesn’t show 3rd party charge points
  • Could do with a few more storage spaces/cubbyholes
  • Opening the glovebox is awkward
  • The boot hatch is too narrow – I much prefer a hatchback
  • Ride quality is on the firm side – Model S & Taycan much more refined.

Tesla Model 3 Long Range 2021, Paul

  • Saloon boot
  • No 360 camera
  • No room for spare wheel.

Surprise us! Tell us something surprising about this car?

I once left my car to go walking with my kids, my phone alerted me that the car alarm had been triggered so we ran back. When I returned, someone had crashed into the front of the car and driven off but the car recorded all of it on its 8 cameras and I was able to show the police and the insurance company the evidence. Saved me my excess, no lost NCB and no increase on premiums the next year either! Who else has that technology?

Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor Long Range 2019, James

It is a good all-rounder, with some amazing technology on board. I find the range sufficient and have done track days, skid pans and other events in it. Plus it can be very easily personalised.

Tesla Model 3 SR+ 2020, Matt

My wife loves small cars normally (Fiesta, Fiat 500) but because this is so easy to drive, it’s the best car she’s ever owned.

What home charging unit do you use? Would you recommend it to others and why?

myenergi zappi – best on the market and easy to install.

Tesla Model 3 Long Range 2021, Louise

We live in a mid terrace with no parking. So it’s a Rolec charger from a 13amp plug across the pavement with traffic cones. Hi-tech solution.

Tesla Model 3 Long Range 2019, Vale

We have an Open Energy Monitoring charger. Yes, it operates like a zappi but more reliable.

Tesla Model 3 SR+ 2020, Matt

I live in a terraced London street but it’s a myth you need a driveway to charge. There are thousands of chargers all over the UK & if there aren’t any near you the Government offers funding to councils. My local ubitricity lamp post chargers cost 24p per kW which is about £70 for 1,000 miles.

What home electricity supplier & tariff do you use? Would you recommend it to others and why?

Octopus Go – it’s incredible, provided 4 hrs cheap rate for charging at night, works out at around 1.5p per mile.

Tesla Model 3 Performance 2021, Shane

I’m on the Tesla Energy Plan from Octopus Energy. I would recommend it for the low-priced electricity and excellent export tariff.

Tesla Model 3 Long Range 2020, John

We have a Powerwall too, so are on Octopus Energy’s Tesla tariff. 8p in and out 24/7, it is highly recommended.

Tesla Model 3 SR+ 2020, Matt

What public charging networks do you use? Would you recommend them to others and why?

I use Zap Map & Wattsapp & when on trips I try and only use chargers with easy quick contactless charging. Both let you filter on these. I do use the excellent Tesla Superchargers & great value (21p-34p) when on trips but also find 40p/kWh Instavolt chargers quick & reliable. The upgraded Gridserve motorway chargers should be even quicker and cheaper (30p) and are being rolled out to replace dreadful old App-based Ecotricity chargers. Pod Point provide some good free & low cost chargers but some faulty units take ages to fix. Ubitricity lamp posts are a good local solution. I would never use IONITY or Source London because of their extortionate pricing.

Tesla Model 3 Performance 2019, David

Tesla superchargers are the only option, they are the best. No other manufacturers care how or where you charge.

Tesla Model 3 Long Range 2019, Vale

  • Tesla superchargers – yes, great coverage and fast
  • Pod Point – yes, if you’re ok with occasional free top up but slow
  • Electric Highway – no, have had issues every time I try to use them.

Tesla Model 3 SR+ 2019, Tom

ChargePlace Scotland for day-to-day charging and Tesla supercharging for distance travelling. Most ChargePlace Scotland chargers in my region are free to use. They are also numerous and well-positioned.

Tesla Model 3 Long Range 2019, Gordon

Who do you insure your EV with? Would you recommend them to others and why?

I used LV who were much better value than Admiral & Direct Line for me but it is worth checking all options & user feedback for your EV. The performance of my Model 3 means it is rated as a performance car for insurance.

Tesla Model 3 Performance 2019, David

Direct Line – dedicated Tesla insurance, that was the lowest cost available.
