Provide your overall rating for the charging unit

Which company installed it and would you recommend them?

Diamond Electrical Services – yes I would recommend them.

How much did you pay for your unit and installation?

£1,295

Why did you purchase this particular unit?

Market-leading integration with our solar panels, allowing us to top up the car with excess solar. This has provided us with around 5,000 miles a year of ‘free’ driving, which is about 50% of our overall total. Provides easy control of charging schedules too for when you do need to use grid power (off-peak in most cases) for extra charging.

What do you particularly like about the charging unit?

Solar integration, easy scheduling & myenergi support.

What don’t you particularly like about the charging unit

  • Wi-Fi connectivity was problematic, so had to install powerline boosters in the garage near the unit to maintain connection
  • you can’t control all settings via the app, some have to be done on the unit itself
  • initially tricky to get setting correct settings for our DC coupled battery, so that it wouldn’t drain the battery on eco++ mode.

Outline any faults you have experienced with the unit

None

Tell us about your home charging routine

During the late spring & summer months, I can just leave the car plugged in with the zappi on eco++ mode, this keeps the car topped up to 80% direct from our solar generation, for the average mileage we do each week (80-100 miles). If we need to charge to 100% for longer trips, we will schedule 2-4 hours of charging overnight on our Intelligent Octopus Go off-peak rate.

If you were buying a new charging unit now, what would you buy and why?

I would definitely consider a zappi but would also look at the Ohme or GivEnergy units as these both allow for excess solar charging too.

Tell us about your electricity provider and tariff. Would you recommend them?

Intelligent Octopus Go – this gives us 6 hours of cheap off-peak electricity. We now use this to recharge our home battery, car & power the house for those 6 hours, so that any excess solar generation created later in the day can be exported. This earns us more than the off-peak rate costs us!

I would definitely recommend Octopus. They’re now offering smart intelligent charging, so they manage your charging at the greenest/cheapest times. I don’t tend to use this as it would drain my house battery during that time. We are only paying £10 month, which covers all gas & electric standing charges & usage for 2 of us in a 4 bed detached house!
