Brian Emment drives a MG4 Trophy 64kWh 2022 electric car.
This is Brian’s second electric car, he’s owned the MG4 for 2-3 months and drives 10,000-15,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 1,000-5,000 miles and he achieves 225 miles range from a full charge.
Why did you choose the MG4?
Having owned an MG5 for 2 years I wanted a car that was equally as practical and good value. When the MG4 was launched it seemed to tick all the boxes for me and the reviews were excellent. Part-ex prices were high and I actually made enough for a good deposit, keeping repayments low. The MG4 is a much more modern car inside and out. Whilst a great introduction to EV motoring, the MG5 looked dated.
Positives
- As with all EVs, the ride in the MG4 is quiet and smooth
- it looks very sporty and when needed it has plenty of acceleration
- I like the roomy and comfortable interior
- the infotainment system.
Negatives
- Small things really but having to reset your preferred settings when you switch off
- as there is no start/stop button it annoys the neighbours when the lights are on before you lock it and remote heat it
- the water swirl in the middle of the rear screen, would have been better if high brake light was incorporated into rear light bar, in my opinion.
Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?
- A little bulge on the underside floor pan which the dealer assured me is not a problem (time will tell)
- sat nav did not activate on collection but dealer rectified it within 5 minutes.
What are the standout technological features of the car?
The many features of the MG Pilot, most of which are excellent. I’m not a fan of lane keep assist but I’m still getting used to it. The heated steering wheel is fast and comfortable as are the 3 stage heated seats. The auto main beam and LED lights are excellent on the quiet country roads of Scotland.
Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about this electric car
The shortcut buttons on the steering wheel to adjust the radio station, volume and heating are really useful. They can also be customised.
What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?
Nothing at the moment. Niro EV and Megane look great but I think the MG4 offers as much tech but for much less money without compromise. Hyundai IONIQ 6 if money was no object.
Do you charge your electric car from home?
No
Do you use public charging networks?
Yes
What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?
ChargePlace Scotland – I live in Stirling where there are many hubs with slow 7kWh, medium 22kWh and rapid 50kWh chargers. Search and you’ll find many are still free to use.
Insurer
Admiral – won’t know how good they are until I need them but a negative is the annual premium, problem of a brand new model I guess.
