MG ZS EV 2022 electric car owner review

Andrew Johnston drives an MG ZS EV 52kWh 2022.

This is Andrew’s first electric car, he’s owned the MG ZS EV from new and drives 20,000-30,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 30,000-40,000 miles and he achieves 150 miles from a full charge.

Why did you choose the MG ZS EV?

Mobility but wish I hadn’t.

Positives

None

Negatives

Cheap and cheerful car with very bad software/firmware in system. There have been no updates in two years of having the car. The dealer does not care.

Compared to when you first bought the car, does your battery still charge at the same rate & do you still get the same range?

No, when I got the car I used to regularly return 190 miles to a charge. I got in it today (not a particularly cold day) and it gave an indication of 133 miles. Very poor!

Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?

Electric safety features continually unavailable due to firmware/software fault.

What’s the biggest or funniest myth you’ve heard about EVs?

They catch fire.

What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?

Toyota EV – better build with a much larger range and not cheap junk like MG.

Home charging unit

Ohme – the charger doesn’t have the flexibility of my previous Easee charger. My previous Easee charger allowed me to vary the current from very slow 1.8kW to 7.6kW which is better for the battery. The Ohme charger does not have that facility and is very limited.

Electricity supplier & tariff

Can’t have a smart meter fitted so cannot have an EV tariff with Octopus. All the benefits are aimed at people who have smart meters and non-smart meter owners are discriminated against when it is not our fault.

What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?

ChargePlace Scotland – they are efficient and provide free charging within my locality. The  downside is that there aren’t enough of them and so queuing and not getting a charge are disadvantages.
