MG4 EV – Road trip report to Norfolk, Neil

MG4 EV - Road trip report to Norfolk, Neil

Neil Allison, Electric Road’s most prolific owner contributor, has been out & about once more!

This time, Neil planned a little break in north Norfolk, one of his favourite places in the UK.

As the dog would be coming, the MG4 EV was the obvious choice and also because it has a better range than my BMW i3.

With everything packed in, including Otto the dog, the first leg took me to Liveden which is a National Trust property near Oundle, Northamptonshire.

The MG4 EV really is like a magic carpet. Very smooth ride quality and very quiet, with lots of instant power in reserve. I was also using Android Auto for Google Maps as my MG4, which is an SE model, doesn’t have factory sat nav installed. To be honest, the Google version is better and more immediate than an OEM version, so no problem there!

Once lunch was out of the way and with nearly 200 miles of range left, I set off to Hunstanton with a planned charging stop at InstaVolt in Kings Lynn. After a lovely drive in the warm sunshine, I arrived at Kings Lynn only to find the charger out of commission. Unusual for InstaVolt, but as it happens, I still had over 100 miles of range left, so I decided to carry on to Hunstanton and charge up the next day.

Once settled in, there would not be much driving to do as the intention was to stay local. I charged up at Kings Lynn the following morning and this gave me enough for the time I’d be in Norfolk and also for the bulk of the journey back.

So, for the time I was there, the MG4 EV commuted between the local seaside towns and villages including Snettisham, Heacham and Blakeney Point. Delightful country lanes which gave the MG a great opportunity to show off its accomplished road handling. I don’t drive like Lewis Hamilton but the car is very reassuring in corners despite a relatively soft ride.

The return journey was a dream. I still had enough range left to complete the home journey, just stopping once for a dog break.  The MG4 EV is such a great car and quite a talking point amongst locals, all interested in how I was getting on with it.

So, that’s another road trip successfully completed in this excellent EV. I also managed to pick one of the hottest weeks to go but the air conditioning system in the car is excellent so all 2 and 4 legged folk were kept lovely and cool!!

My advice is, if you are able buy an MG4 EV then just do it. It’s incredible value and a car that really punches above its weight.
